The next morning, Jennifer got up carly, brought her documents, and went to complete her onboarding at the Juvenile Detention Center.
This time, Brayan didn’t interfere, and Jennifer finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She’d be working here as a youth psychological counselor, technically a volunteer, with no pay.
Not that Jennifer needed the money.
The process went more smoothly than she’d expected. The head instructor personally showed her around and explained the basics of the Juvenile Detention Center.
Jennifer didn’t mention that she was already quite familiar with this place. She had spent some time here as a child.
The layout was still like ten years ago, but the place had been renovated. Everything felt fresh and new.
Jennifer thought that was a good thing. If everything had been left the same, it would’ve stirred up too many emotions.
After all, this was where her love for Brayan had first ben
But she was the only one still trapped in the memory of that young love. Brayan had long forgotten about it.
“If you have any questions, feel free to come to me… Ms. Griffin?”
Snapping back to reality, Jennifer nodded at the instructor.

She hadn’t chosen to volunteer at the Juvenile Detention Center to relive her youthful romance with Brayan, much less to grieve over what she’d lost.
She wanted to do something meaningful.
Jennifer took a deep breath. Just as she was about to enter her office, she noticed something happening at the end of the hallway.
A group of delinquent–looking students had surrounded a gentle- looking instructor.
It was easy for Jennifer to tell them apart because students and instructors wore different uniforms.
Though instructors were supposed to discipline these troubled teens, this one looked far too youthful, almost like a minor himself. It didn’t seem like he could defend himself against this bunch of delinquent- looking students.
“What are you all doing?” Jennifer walked over.
Seeing a beautiful woman in professional attire approaching, some of the students whistled, while others warned Jennifer not to stick her nose where it didn’t belong.
“You’re all underage, so you won’t be locked up for fighting. But if you lay a hand on an instructor, I can contact your parents and make sure you stay here for a few more years. It’d be a shame to waste the best years of your youth in this place.”
Though Jennifer said it casually, the students didn’t look relaxed in the slightest.
“Humph,” the leader/snorted and reluctantly led the group away.
“Are you okay?” Jennifer turned to the gentle–looking instructor.

“I’m fine. Thanks for stepping in!” The instructor scratched the back of his neck and gave an awkward smile, looking even more like a high school student.
He held out his hand to Jennifer.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Jasper Manning. You must be the new psychological counselor, right?”
Jennifer shook his hand. “Yes, I’m Jennifer Griffin.”
“I’m new here too. I’m a volunteer like you. Just doing this for a summer college program.”
Jennifer instinctively sized him up. Despite the uniform, Jasper really did give off a strong student vibe from head to toe.
Jasper was also eyeing Jennifer curiously, his eyes sparkling.
“Ms. Griffin, you’re so pretty. I bet you’re the prom queen of your school.”
Jennifer couldn’t help laughing. She didn’t think she still looked young enough to be mistaken for a college student.
“So are you only here until the end of the summer break?”
“Yeah! Aren’t you?”
“I’m not part–time. I’m planning to stay here long–term.”
“But this is volunteer work. There’s no pay!”
