Chapter12
Asher’s POV
The whole pack was in grief when we buried Patrick and Elena.
It was hard enough to lose my Gamma. I had made a promise to
myself to take good care of his mate. But then we lost Elena as
well.
I got why Elena made this decision though. Losing your mate was
too painful. It was almost impossible for lone wolf to make it on
their own.
If I lost Violet, I didn’t know what I would do. I would probably go
down the same path as Elena.
I felt Elena’s death at midnight. I got up immediately to check on
them. When I walk into the room, Violet was testing Elena
breathing. Then she started shaking her best friend, as though
that could bring the dead back to life.
Violet had lost her wolf, which was why she couldn’t sense
Elena’s death. Soldiers tried to bring Elena’s body away, but she
wouldn’t let them. She just couldn’t believe that her friend was
gone.
I was worried about Violet. Afraid that she couldn’t walk out of
the shadow of her friend’s death. And there was Elena’s daughter
Mia.
Apparently, Elena had asked Violet to take care of her. But how
could Violet care for a child when she was so sick herself?
But Mia was one little wonder.
She really helped Violet to move past the trauma.
The day after Elena’s funeral, Violet brought Mia over to live
with her. She quickly adapted to the mother’s role, feeding,
bathing, playing with the child and telling bedtime story. She
nailed at every task. Elena would be relieved to see how happy
Mia was with Violet.
And I was grateful of Mia’s existence. She helped divert Violet’s
attention. Now Violet was no longer caught up in Elena’s death.
She was busing keeping her promise and being a strong mom.
And that was when I received Alpha Solomon and Dominokov’s
call.
Their pack had been attacked by rogues as well. They lost.
members too.
I immediately called Jayden over to discuss this new piece of
information.
“The attack is definitely planned,” I said to Jayden in a cold voice.
“Rogues are not social creatures. They scatter everyone and live
without a leader. But multiple attacks within such a short.
amount of time? This is no coincidence.”
Jayden agreed with a nod, “They did serious damage to all of us.
Nothing like this has ever happened before. My guess is that they
have a capable leader to organize the attack this time.”
I clenched my fists in hatred, my wolf screaming for revenge.
These rogues would regret this. Soon there will be a
counterattack. An eye for an eye.
“Gather our allies. Let’s figure out the next move,” I said to
Jayden.
“Yes, Alpha Asher.” Jayden paused, and then switched to a lighter
subject. “So, are you ready to be a father?”
My face softened at the mention of Mia.
I had always adored her ever since she was born. And now she was practically my own daughter. Even if I had my own children in the future, Mia wouldn’t be any difference from them.
“Patrick will always be her father,” I said to Jayden. “But yeah, I
guess I am excited about this new role.”
Jayden gave me a searching look, “Then what about Violet? Are
you ready to forgive her?”
I knew he was afraid that I would hurt his sister. He saw how
angry I was when I found out Violet had been lying to me. He
feared that I would do something reckless again.
I was indeed furious at the time. But lately being with Violet had
made me realize that I couldn’t get over her. And she had feelings
for me too. I could tell from her eyes.
“Maybe,” I gave Jayden a rather vague answer. “I want to hear
her explanation first. And then decide where we will go from
here.”
“What do you want her to explain?”
“Why she hid her scent and lied to me,” I gritted. Honestly, it hurt
every time I thought about it. “I could tell that Violet loved me.
Then why did she do that? I feel like there is a bigger story behind
- it. So I have been waiting for Violet to tell me the truth.”
Jayden hesitated for a few moments.
“I think.” he began reluctantly, “Maybe my parents have
something to do with it.”
I let out a sneer, “Figured.”
I saw Violet and her mom making eye contact earlier. And her
mom had that guilty look on her face. If anyone in this world
could force Violet to give up on me, it must be her parents.
“What will you do if it is really my parents?” Jayden asked,
worried.
I gritted. Anger was already started to surge up in me. I could
never forgive the people who caused our separation, not even if
it were her mom and dad.
“I don’t know. You better pray that your parents aren’t involved,”
I said in a freezing tone.
Jayden sighed deeply. He could see that I was determined to
punish the people responsible for this. So he didn’t even begin to
ask for my mercy.
“How is Kylie?” I asked Jayden, “I decide to find out the truth and
then end this marriage with Kylie, hopefully before Patrick’s
mourning ends.”
“About that, can you wait a big longer?” Jayden said in a pleading
tone, “Kylie is really vulnerable right now. If you end things with
her, it will send her right back to 7 years ago when she just lost
her mate. It would kill her.”
“Stuck in this marriage with me won’t do her any good either.
And it isn’t fair for me and Violet as well. I am tired of waiting.” I
told Jayden honestly.
Kylie had been sick during most of our marriage. Both of us had
known that this was a dead end even before Violet came back. I
didn’t know why Kylie was still hold on to this.
“Can’t you tell that Kylie is in love with you?” Jayden sighed, “I
feel for both of my sisters. I want neither of them to get hurt. So
please. can you hold it off till we figure something out?”
I frowned.
It might be a cruel thing to say but Violet was the only person I
cared about right now. I would never put anyone else before her.
“The answer is no,” I said to Jayden nonchalantly. “Kylie might
just need to get over with this herself. She isn’t the only victim
here. Others had been through worse and survived it. So I’m sure.
Kylie can survive it as well. Violet is my top priority now.”
“But you are clearly not her priority,” Jayden blurt out.
