Violet’s POV
“Are you OK?” Asher asked me for the 3(rd) time during
breakfast.
“I’m fine,” I answered.
The truth was I was still unnerved. But Mia was with us right
now. It was terrifying enough to have someone sneaking into our room and leaving such a scary note, I didn’t want her to feel that
she couldn’t even rely on her guardian. So I pretended to be
strong.
Asher saw right through me. He reached out to me and held my
hand underneath the table. I looked up to him. We exchanged a
brief smile.
“Don’t worry. Philip is already on it. He’ll find out who did this,”
Asher said, giving Philip a nod across the table.
“That is right Violet. You are in good hands right now,” said Philip
with a grin.
Asher had decided to let Philip lead this investigation. So he
invited Philip over for breakfast so we could talk it through.
But among all the members in this pack, Philip was the last one I
trusted.
Not that I saw him as a traitor or anything, I just felt that he was biased, just like my parents. He always preferred Kylie over me. I didn’t know if his preference would affect this investigation or
not.
The good thing was that Mia didn’t seem to be affected by this incidence very much. Maybe because she was still too small to
realize how creepy this was.
Right now she had finished her breakfast and was busy adjusting
the bow on her skirt.
I came to fix the bow for her. She had a playday this afternoon
and was thrilled about this.
Asher arranged this playday. He believed that it would help take
Mia’s mind off her parent’s tragedy. Apparently, he was right.
Mia seemed very happy right now.
“Do you like my skirt?” she did a spin to demonstrate her outfit.
“It is very lovely,” I told her with a smile. “I have cupcakes ready
for your friends. And there are candies in the kitchen. Just asked
maids for it.”
She held my hand, “Do you want to come and meet my friend?”
I was very touched. It was so sweet of her to offer to introduce
me to her friend. But I still thought she deserved to have some
fun time with just her friends.
“No, you go ahead sweetheart, maybe next time. I need to get
ready for the pack meeting later today.”
Today was the first time I attended the pack meeting.
I was going to announce myself as Luna and hopefully win the
member’s heart at the meeting.
Asher told me about this right after I found the note on my
dresser. I couldn’t believe how little time I had left to get ready. I
felt like everything was happening at the same time, and it would
only be a matter of time before I messed something up.
“What’s the matter Violet?” Philip gave me a cool smile,
“Nervous?”
“Not even a bit.” I lied.
He chuckled.
“If you hadn’t ran away from home for 5 years, you wouldn’t
need to worry about winning those hearts right now,” he said in
a playfully, sarcastic tone.
“Philip,” Asher growled, giving him a warning look.
But I didn’t need Asher to fight my battle for me.
“If you and Mom and Dad hadn’t favored Kylie so much, I
wouldn’t have had to hide away for so many years,” I shot back,
just as fiercely.
Philip shrugged. Asher gave me an encouraging smile, “Don’t
worry. Just show them your confidence and strength. Make
them recognize you as Luna.”
I gulped nervously and nodded.
Asher wasn’t so worried about this. In his mind, he could force
anyone to do whatever he wanted, so he believed that I was
capable of the same.
But the problem was I didn’t have his power and a strong wolf.
“What if someone challenge you at the meeting?” Philip asked.
I balled my fists, “I guess I will accept their challenge.”
“Are you out of your mind?” he gasped in disbelief, “You don’t
have a wolf! You will get killed!”
It was a custom for members to challenge the newies to a fight
when they first came into the pack. That fight often resulted in
injury or death.
“I will be careful. But I am not a coward,” I said.
Philip gave me a complicated look. Suddenly he looked worried.
A flash of guilt passed through his eyes. Maybe he finally realized
how inconvenient it was for me to be wolfless.
“Are you going to get hurt at that meeting?” Mia suddenly asked.
She had been listening attentively by our side. “Then I am going
to the meeting as well!”
I smiled. Asher answered before me, “Sorry sweetheart, but you
are too young to go. You can trust me to protect Violet. Won’t let
anything happen to her.”
Mia looked suspicious, “Pinky promise?”
Asher hooked her little finger, “Yes, pinky promise. Do you need
to have a maid do your hair before meeting your friends?”
“Let me do it,” I volunteered. I needed to stop imagining all the
horrible things that might happened at the meeting.
took Mia back to the room and sat her in front of the mirror. I
braided her hair and added little bow to match her skirt.
Are you Luna right now?” she looked at me through the mirror.
“Not yet sweetie. But I definitely hope to be one.”
“You will.” she said in a firm voice with a firm nod, “Mom said
that my godmother will become Luna sooner or later. So I believe
in you.”
My dear daughter and my best friend all had faith in me. I
suddenly got a strong motivation. Maybe this meeting wouldn’t
be so bad after all.
“Thank you, Mia.” I kissed her on the forehead, “I think I am
ready for the meeting now.”
