Violet’s POV
I woke up feeling lighter than I had in days. The fever was
finally gone, and I could feel my body returning back to normal.
My head still pounded, but it was nothing compared to the
relentless heat that had consumed me for what felt like an
eternity.
Images from last night flashed across my mind. It was indeed a
crazy night. I flushed and pushed myself up in bed, blinking
against the sunlight streaming through the window. I slipped
out of bed, my legs shaky from the wild sex last night as I made
my way toward the door.
When I got downstairs, I found Julia and Olivia sitting at the
kitchen table, talking quietly. They looked up as I entered, both
of them smiling.
“Good morning,” Julia said warmly, getting up from her seat. “I
left you some breakfast.”
She handed me a tray, and I took it with a grateful smile. My
stomach rumbling at the sight of the food.
“Thank you.”
I sat down by the table and took a bite of the toast, savoring the
simple taste. The head drained me up, and it felt good to eat
something, to feel my strength returning.
“Where’s Mia?” I asked, glancing around.
“She’s in the playroom. That little girl is such a delight,” Julia
said, her smile brightening. “Jayden’s looking after her right
now. He loves to spend time with her.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. It was good to
know that Mia was being well taken care of. And I hoped she
didn’t notice my absence from last night. I didn’t want her to be
troubled by any grownup issues.
Julia was still in the kitchen baking an apple pie. I looked at her,
taking in her kind eyes and the way she moved with such ease.
I could never be that elegant in kitchen. The best I could make
was mac and cheese and I had to be careful not to burn it.
“You’re amazing,” I said, shaking my head. “How did someone
like you end up married to my brother?”
Julia laughed, a light, genuine sound that filled the room.
Chapter 58
“I ask myself the same thing sometimes,” she said, her eyes
twinkling with joy. “I never imagined I’d end up with someone
like Jayden. He’s so perfect. I’m still waiting for the day he
realizes I’m not good enough for him.”
My mouth fell open in shock, almost choking on my toast.
“Wait, what? No! I didn’t mean it like that. I meant that Jayden
doesn’t deserve you.”
Now it was her turn to be surprised, “Oh you can’t be serious. If
you ever think that way, it’s because you don’t know your
brother like I do. I can’t think of a single flaw that he has.”
I rolled my eyes internally. My brother’s flaw? How about
arrogant, condescending, self–righteous, biased…I could do this
all day. I love my brother but he was definitely not a saint. Julia‘
s eyes were clouded by love.
Then she continued, “You would be proud of him too if you
knew everything he’s done for you, for all of us.”
Her words made me pause, the warmth in her eyes making me
feel a little guilty. Jayden had always been the strong one, the
one who held everything together. Even last night, I believed I
had heard his voice outside of my door. He must be so worried.
“I know he’s a good big brother,” I said quietly. “And…Thank
you for everything too. Julia and Olivia, thank you both for
staying with me yesterday. You were like the true sister I never
had.”
Olivia smiled, her eyes bright, .”You don’t need to thank us,
Violet. We’re just so thrilled to have you back. You don’t know
what it has been like while you were away. Kylie’s been
manipulating Philip and the others and they all sided with her.
Julia and I didn’t have a single ally in this house. It’s been…hard.
I don’t like that girl one bit.”
I wasn’t surprised at all.
Kylie had always been a source of tension in our family. She
loved to be in the center of attention, to have my 3 brothers
surrounding her 24/7. She must hate it when my brothers
found their mates and deliberately made their lives hard.
I didn’t want to remind them of those sad memories, so I change
the subject, “You and Jayden are good with Mia. You clearly
love children. Why haven’t you had any children of your own
yet?”
Julia hesitated, her smile faltering for a moment. And so did
Olivia.
Chapter 58
“Oh sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
“No it’s fine. We are sisters. We can talk about anything.” Julia
forced a smile, her voice soft. “We’ve been trying ever since we
mated. We’ve seen doctors, and there’s nothing wrong with
either of us. But… it just hasn’t happened.”
“Maybe it’s not the right time yet.” Olivia sighed.
My heart ached for her, for Jayden. They were such loving
people, and I knew they would make amazing parents.
And this didn’t seem right. Mated couple must have been
through several of heats together already and it was very easily
for them to get pregnant during that time, unless they were
will, but that’s not the case according to the doctor.
I suddenly remembered the witch and her witchcraft.
When bizarre thing happened, oftentimes it wasn’t a
coincidence. Could Julia’s infertility resulted from a curse or
something?
But I didn’t want to tell them just yet to add their worry. I
decided to look into this issue myself after the chaos quieted
down in this packhouse.
Olivia cleared her throat, her eyes serious as she looked at me.
“The thing about your mother…” she said, her voice trailing off.
“The others are still coming to terms with it. It’s a lot to take in.”
Speaking of the chaos in this house.
I looked down at my plate, the words sinking in. The truth
about my mother, the revelation that she wasn’t who I thought
she was, had been a shock. But I had grown up feeling like an
outsider, always sensing that something was different about
- me. Now I knew why.
“But hey,” Olivia gave me a smile, trying to lighten the mood.
“At least you’re only half related to that crazy bitch Kylie. That‘
s got to be a good thing, right?”
I couldn’t help but laugh, a small, strained sound that escaped
before I could stop it.
“Yeah. That’s definitely a silver lining.”
