Asher’s POV
“I’m not sure if this will make things easier for you, but I was the one who decided to keep my distance from you. I told father not to mention me to you because I couldn’t bear how much
you had,” he said.
My anger flared. Fantastic–he’s just like Isaac.
“So, you were jealous too, and that’s why you’re doing all this to
hurt me,” I snapped. I can’t believe I ever felt sorry for him. I
thought he had a right to seek revenge, but now I see he’s just as
bitter and selfish as Isaac.
“I wasn’t jealous of you for having parents. That’s not
something you can control, so why would I be? But I’ll admit, I
envied that you were born normal. I wished I had a mother like
yours. I hated that you could call our father ‘dad,’ and that
people looked at you without fear of what you might become.”
I stared at him in silence as he confessed. I could tell he was
being honest, and I appreciated that.

“That’s no excuse for avoiding your brother!” The truth is, he never cared about me, and at least he’s upfront about it.
“You got our father’s heart. You forgive easily and believe
everything will work out in the end, but that’s not how Isaac
and I are. We’ve seen the worst of this world. We know pain
and rejection, and that’s why I aligned with Isaac. But I didn’t
stand by him when he wanted to kill you.“”
That’s his reason? Because we were different? But I didn’t
choose to be born differently from my brothers, and I sure
wouldn’t apologize for it.
“You might not have supported him, but you didn’t stop them
when they hurt me, and it made you happy.” I wouldn’t let him
paint himself as a total victim. He was far from innocent from
my point of view.
“I won’t apologize for what happened. Nothing I say or do can
change the past. But if you really want to end this war, you’ll
have to help me take on the witches. They killed my mother,
just like our uncle killed our parents, and you got your revenge
on him.”
It’s almost funny that he thinks the two situations are the same.

“I got my revenge on my uncle, but I didn’t drag innocent people
into it.” What he’s planning is a massacre of an entire group.
And I know that if you provoke the witches, they’ll come after
you with everything they’ve got. I’m not stepping into that
mess.
His face darkened, clearly disappointed by my response. “That’s
what makes you different. I wasted my time thinking I could
reason with you, that you might understand me. You believe
good always wins.”
He stood up, but I motioned for the witch to join us.
“If you think I don’t get it, then talk to someone who wants you
to understand them,” I said to him.
When he saw the witch, he looked at me like I’d stabbed him in
the back. But all I can do is try to make him see things from
another angle.
“So, you think teaming up with them and turning against me is
the right move?” He snapped.
He stared at the witch with a hatred so intense it was almost
frightening. It’s one thing to hate someone who’s hurt you, but
to hate someone for what their ancestors did is unfair.

“I’m trying to show you the destruction you’ll cause if you let this hatred take over. I got my revenge on my uncle, and I don’t regret it, but I didn’t blame the entire Royal Pack for his actions. His mistakes shouldn’t define others.”
“Un like you, I’m not a big saint,” he said.
“King Alexander told me you want nothing to do with our kind. But before you act, think about the lives of those who weren’t even born when all this happened,” the witch said. I’m willing to let this witch influence Javier, but she’s not controlling me. She’s as ruthless as the rest of them. I will never forget how she helped Violet’s parents break our bond.
“Nothing you say will change my mind. I want them all gone because they’re evil and always causing trouble for us.” Xavier stood and started pacing. He’s right–many witches are evil, but you can’t punish all of them for the actions of a few.
“I’m not asking you to give up your revenge, but we need to be smart about this. With her help,” I pointed to the witch, “we can bring the real culprits, including the council, to justice. If you prefer, we can take them out. But I want to make sure only the guilty pay, not the innocent.””
“And you expect me to trust this witch?” he snapped.

Right now, I don’t even trust myself. She hasn’t even told me who’s responsible, yet I’ve promised him we’ll bring them to justice.
