Phoebe saw Garrett and immediately turned on the waterworks, “Garrett, she hit my sister!”
Yet Garrett stared at his palm in shock, then looked at me with guilt. “Rylee, I didn’t mean to…”
Daphne scoffed. “Is this how the great Garrett Montgomery proves his devotion to us? Still entangled with your ex wife even after the divorce?”
“If that’s the case, my sister and I simply can’t be with you.”
“We come from a respectable family. We absolutely refuse to be homewreckers.”
With that, she gave me a pointed look. “Unlike some people who can’t take a hint and leave. Is this what passes for dignity in your high society?”
Garrett’s face tensed. “Rylee, apologize to Daphne and Phoebe.”
Snow began to fall from the sky. I clutched Autumn’s stiffening body tightly to my chest.
My eyes blazed as 1 defiantly met his gaze. “They killed my dog.”
They killed the companion who had been with me for fifteen years–the last thing my mother had left me in this world!
Compassion flickered in Garrett’s eyes, but Phoebe grabbed her sister’s arm. “Garrett, that beast attacked my sister first!”
My blood boiled. Autumn was gentle–she would never attack anyone unprovoked.
Garrett immediately went to check Daphne’s hand. “Does it hurt?”
Daphne turned away petulantly. “What does it matter if it hurts? The real culprit won’t be punished anyway.”
Garrett’s voice turned indulgent. “My little princess, what do you want me to do?”
Daphne gave me a malicious look. “Since your ex wife has so much empathy for a beast, why doesn’t she spend the night in a dog kennel?”
Without a second thought, Garrett agreed. “Tine. Whatever makes Daphne happy.”
Daphne finally smiled, a smile so dazzling that Garrett was mesmerized, unable to tear his eyes away from her face.
Then Garrett looked at me with disgust and ordered his security guards: “Do as Miss Davis says!”
The guard hesitated, reluctant to follow through. “But sir, it’s below freezing outside. Mrs. Montgomery, she

Daphne’s face darkened, and she turned to leave. “Even your security listens to your ex wife more than you. How am I supposed to believe you’ll be good to me and my sister?”
Garrett immediately chased after her, taking her in his arms. “Alright, alright, princess. We’ll do exactly as you say!”
He then glared at the guard. “What are you waiting for? Get on with it!”
I struggled violently, but I was still locked in the dog kennel.
Phoebe picked up Autumn by the tail and turned to Garrett with a coy smile. “Garrett, it’s freezing today–perfect weather for some hearty stew. Let’s celebrate our move in by cooking up that mutt, what do you say?”
I clutched the cage bars in desperation “No! Please!”
“I’m begging you! Garrett, don’t do this to Autumn
I knelt in the rage, banging my head against the bars over and over, but Garrett was entranced by Daphine’s face, holding het hand to his lips and blowing on it repeatedly to keep her warm

Chapter 3
He didn’t look at me again as he put his arm around Daphne’s waist, took Phoebe’s hand, and walked into the mansion.
I called his name over and over, each cry more desperate than the last, like the wailing of a tortured soul in the dead of night.
I don’t remember when I passed out from the cold. When I came to, the smell of cooking wafted from the mansion.
A bowl of crushed bones sat in front of me.
I clutched Autumn’s leash, my nails digging deep into my palm. “Garrett Montgomery, I will NEVER, EVER forgive you.”
But when I woke up the next day, he was sitting by my bed, his eyes red.
