Chapter 5
Sure enough, footsteps soon approached.
“You said the Alpha King went to Lyra’s bedroom?” a sweet voice rang out.
It was the same she-wolf who had spoken to the Alpha King that day. I peeked out from behind the tree trunk, watching carefully.
She wore an extravagant palace gown, with a servant who kept her head bowed. “Yes…”
“I’ve been in the castle for two whole days and haven’t even seen the Alpha King, but that stupid girl already won his favor on her first day here. How is that fair?!” The she-wolf snapped a peach branch beside her in fury.
The servant replied quietly, “Her father is the Alpha of the Bluemoon Pack. Their warriors were sent to support the Royal Guard. Perhaps the Alpha King…”
Before she could finish, the she-wolf cut her off. “Besides our Riverrun Pack, who else could be of real use to him?”
“My lady,” the servant quickly looked around and warned in a hushed tone, “please mind your words.”
I could barely follow their conversation – it was like fog in my head.
But I did hear them mention my father… and our pack’s warriors.
Once they walked off, I turned to look at the Alpha King beside me.
He was still letting me cover his mouth, standing obediently, while behind him, Callum looked pale as a ghost, like the sky was about to fall.
I messed up again.
“I… I…” I let go of the Alpha King and looked up at him miserably, on the verge of tears. “Can you punish me instead of my father?”
He looked down at me, the corners of his lips curling slightly as he gently plucked a leaf from my
hair.
“I’m not going to punish you,” he said softly, coaxing me. “But Lyra, can you tell me… how did you know Aubrey was here? And how did you know she was a bad person?”
I blinked.
So her name was Aubrey. That meant she must be the daughter of the Riverrun Pack’s Alpha.
“Hm?” He leaned in slightly, trapping me between him and the tree.

I swallowed nervously, ducked under his arm, and took off running with my skirts in hand. “I… I’m a bit tired! Time for bed!”
But after I had bathed and was lying in bed… the Alpha King came anyway.
Afraid he’d ask more questions, I grabbed the blanket and pulled it over my head.
“Lyra?”
“I’m asleep. I don’t know anything.”
After a moment, I heard the Alpha King let out a soft chuckle.
I carefully peeked out from under the blanket, revealing just my eyes.
Candlelight flickered behind him, casting long shadows at his feet.
His hands were clasped behind his back as he bent slightly toward me, smiling with that cool, teasing expression. “Lyra, you’re quite bold. You haven’t fulfilled your duties tonight and already put yourself to bed.”
Fulfill
my duties at night?
The elder she-wolves said that meant I was supposed to sleep with the Alpha King.
It was my first night away from home, and honestly, I was a little scared. But if the Alpha King was going to sleep beside me, then I definitely wouldn’t be scared at all.
Thinking that, I scooted over and made space beside me, my eyes sparkling as I looked up at him. “I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat… of course I’ll serve the Alpha King.”
The Alpha King paused for a moment. Then the corners of his eyes curved beautifully as he smiled.
He asked me, “Lyra, do you even know what it means to serve the Alpha King in bed?”
Of course I knew!
The elder she-wolves said that in bed, I must listen to the Alpha King. So when the Alpha King said, Don’t move, I truly didn’t dare move at all.
“You really know what it means to serve in bed?” the Alpha King asked again, seeing how still I was lying there.
