The next morning, I went to the office to pack up my stuff.
Voices were floating from the break room.
“Anya, is Silas making it official today?”
“Oh totally! Anyone with half a brain can see how he’s obsessed with you!”
“I’m so over that uptight bitch. Always making us pull those crazy hours with her, and everyone knows she slept her way to the top. Acting like she’s some kind of boss lady!”
When they spotted me, Anya’s smile got even bigger.
I didn’t give a shit. I walked to my VP office, but found papers scattered all over the floor.
Anya followed me, putting on this fake surprised look.
“Oh, you didn’t know? Silas said I’m the new VP. He’s announcing it at the board meeting later.”
“I thought you weren’t coming in, so I went ahead and packed your stuff.”
When I saw my grandmother’s belongs on the floor, torn and dirty,I fucking lost it.
“You think you can mess with my stuff? You’re nothing!”
I stormed into Silas’s office, slamming my hands on his desk.
“Did you really tell her she could take my VP position?”
I slapped my resignation letter on his desk.
“Fine! I quit!”
Before he could say anything, Anya came running in, crying.
“Silas, my mom just called. Someone spray–painted our house, wrote ‘homewrecker go die‘ all over it…”
“Mom’s in the hospital now,she’s too humiliated to face anyone…”
Anya’s voice was shaking as she pulled up a video on her phone.
“Hey, Rowe family! Your daughter’s a shameless homewrecker!“”
“Get the hell out of our neighborhood! You disgust me!”
“If your daughter shows her face here again, I’ll beat her ass!”

The video showed Anya’s mom cornered, begging for mercy.
Anya started sobbing harder.
“Silas, maybe I should just quit!”
She was a mess, tears dripping all over his desk.
Silas looked at me, his eyes dark as hell.
“You did this shit, didn’t you?”
“I told you over and over, it’s just seven days! Why would you do this to an innocent girl!”
“She just wanted a chance, and I thought you’d at least understand!”
The veins in Silas’s forehead were bulging.
I felt completely empty inside.
“You sure it was me?”
“You know exactly how she got that project. If I wanted to screw her over, I wouldn’t need to pull this kind of stunt!”
He walked over and grabbed me by the throat, his cold stare making me shake.
“Everything you have, I gave you. You think you earned any of this? One word from me and I can destroy everything!”
I couldn’t breathe,stared at him in disbelief.
In that moment, I knew for sure – he actually wanted to kill me.
After what felt like forever, he finally let go.
I collapsed like a doll.
Gasping for air.
He signed my resignation without even looking, not noticing the divorce papers mixed in with it.
He threw the papers at me hard.
The sharp edge sliced my skin, and I could smell blood in the air.
The man I’d loved for years didn’t even see me anymore – his eyes were full of concern for another bitch.
I was the pathetic one who’d tried to reach above my station.
I’d always been the joke.

I laughed bitterly, picked up the divorce papers, and struggled to stand.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Anya smirking.
