The plane gradually ascended, leaving the ground behind as the sprawling metropolis of Boston eventually shrank to a mere speck.
Jessica exhaled deeply, finally withdrawing her gaze from the window, a smile of relief forming on her lips.
From this moment on, Maxwell Reed would have no connection to her. She‘ was beginning a brand–new life.
For whatever remained of his life, he could spend it with Olivia forever. It didn’t matter to her anymore.
She closed her eyes, no longer watching the scenery outside, quietly savoring her freedom.
Meanwhile, Maxwell was indulgently accompanying Olivia as she shopped.
Anything that caught Olivia’s eye for more than a few seconds, he generously purchased for her.
Looking at all the luxury bags and jewelry she had acquired, Olivia’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction, though she pretended to be conflicted.
“Mr. Reed, if I accept all these gifts, won’t Professor Reid be upset?” she asked, affecting concern.
“She’s never liked me. Today is your wedding anniversary, yet you’re here with me. She must be in a terrible mood. And now you’re giving me all these gifts… won’t she accuse me of stealing you away?”
She bit her lip fretfully, looking down. “Maybe I should just leave. She probably wouldn’t be angry anymore if I were gone. I don’t
want to be bullied by her again.”
Before she finished speaking, Olivia put down the luxury shopping bags and turned to leave, pretending to wipe away tears.
Maxwell grabbed her tightly, panic in his voice: “Olivia, don’t go!”
“I’ve told you, with me around, I won’t let Jessica bully you ever again. If she dares hurt you, I won’t let her get away with it. Don’t leave my side, okay? I can’t be without you.”
Out of his sight, Olivia’s lips curled into a smirk, her eyes filled with triumph.
Aside from slightly reddened eyes from rubbing them, there was no trace that she had been crying at all.
She covered her face, pretending to sob, then looked back at Maxwell with teary eyes,
“Mr. Reed, thank goodness I have you. I trust you’ll protect me.”
“But I wonder when Professor Reid will stop targeting and bullying me. If she keeps this up, it’ll wear me down too.”
“She’s your wife, while you’re merely pursuing me. I know I’ll ultimately be the one you abandon. If you don’t plan to give me a future, could you please stop pursuing me?”
“I’m afraid of losing my heart to you, only to lose everything else too. Better to never have started at all.”
Seeing the water glistening in Olivia’s eyes, Maxwell felt a pang of sympathy,
He frowned thoughtfully for a moment, then stroked her hair, softly reassuring her: “I’ll find a way to make her stop targeting you. We will have a future, I promise.”
Another vague, noncommittal promise. Olivia inwardly scoffed, secretly gritting her teeth.
He claimed to love and care for her, yet refused to divorce Jessica and marry her. Was this what he called love?

She didn’t want to spend her life as a mistress, desperately seeking approval only to receive scraps of his affection.
She wanted to be his lawful wife!
Since he couldn’t make this decision, she would help him!
Olivia had formulated a rough plan. While dining with Maxwell at a romantic restaurant, she briefly excused herself. When she returned, she was holding a small packet of powder.
However, Maxwell sat across from her, staring at the red exclamation mark on his phone screen, his expression growing increasingly
dark.
He didn’t even notice Olivia’s suspicious behavior.
His warning message to Jessica had failed to send. Not just Instagram–she had blocked him on text messages, phone calls, everything.
What game was she playing?
Just because he hadn’t celebrated their wedding anniversary with her? Because he hadn’t seen whatever “surprise” she had prepared?
They had been married for years–was it really necessary to make such a fuss over missing one anniversary? It wasn’t like he had never celebrated with her before; he had just missed this one time.
Maxwell’s entire demeanor turned icy as he called the housekeeper.
“Claire, is Jessica home? Put her on the phone. I need to speak with her.”
