I didn’t run into Mia at school until a week after I started.
She wore an expensive princess dress and carried a delicate little basket, going from desk to desk handing out gifts as soon as she entered the classroom.
When she reached my desk, she shot me a provocative glance, then placed a small box on my desk and walked away.
After distributing all the gifts, Mia walked to the front of the classroom and gracefully bowed to everyone.
“Hello everyone, I’m Mia Hayes, Mr. Whitman’s granddaughter. Please take care of me from now on.”
This introduction made me wonder if Mia had actually been reborn at all–how could someone in their twenties possibly say something so smug in front of a group of eight–year–olds?
I couldn’t understand what she got out of showing off to a bunch
of kids.
A boy named Tom in our class pointed at Mia and asked, “Why don’t you and Mr. Whitman have the same last name?”
Mia paused slightly, looking momentarily embarrassed, but the next second she lifted her chin and said, “I’m Mr. Whitman’s adopted granddaughter.”

“What’s your relationship with Ruby?” someone asked, pointing at me. “You two look alike and have the same last name.”
Mia glanced at me but didn’t answer, just returned to her seat.
The teacher then said, “Let’s give our new classmate a round of applause, and then we’ll start class.”
My desk mate leaned over and whispered, “Do you know Mia?”
I just nodded, not mentioning that Mia was my twin sister.
After class, Mia called me to a deserted corner of the playground and warned me, “Ruby, even though we’re sisters who were both adopted by the Whitman family, you live with Caleb and I live with Sam, so let’s keep our distance from now on!”
Since she put it that way, I could only nod.
Mia looked me up and down, then suddenly started laughing.
“How’s it going? Life with Caleb isn’t easy, is it? Your clothes are so ugly.”
She spun around in front of me and said, “Sam bought this for me. Isn’t it pretty?”
I didn’t respond.

Seeing my silence, Mia lifted her chin again and said, “Anyway, don’t come to me if you need anything in the future. I won’t help you. Since that’s how it is, Ruby, let’s each live our own lives and suffer our own hardships.”
She turned and walked toward the school building, muttering, “At least I’ll never suffer again.”
I could tell that Sam hadn’t laid a hand on her yet these past few days.
But it would happen soon.
Sure enough, just a few days later, I suddenly received news that Sam had taken Mia to Germany for treatment.
In my previous life, Sam didn’t take me abroad until I was in college.
I didn’t know why they went to Germany so early this time.
