Chapter 8
I didn’t have to wait long for that opportunity.

After the first week of classes ended, Caleb came to pick me up from school.
“Grandpa wants us to come home for dinner.” Caleb gripped the steering wheel with both hands, eyes fixed ahead, his tone calm.
I was going to see Sam again.
I gazed out the window and gave a noncommittal hum in
response.
Caleb seemed to glance at me sideways. “Are you nervous? Or do you just not want to see Grandpa?”
I was about to speak when I heard Caleb continue, “If you don’t want to see him, you don’t have to.”
Caleb knew his grandfather well.
“Even though Grandpa and I haven’t seen each other in ten years, we’re still family. I should at least meet with him.”
After saying this, I added, “Besides, it’s not like I have to deal with him every day.”
Caleb made a sound of acknowledgment.

I’d heard that people who are good at scheming don’t get sick easily. Sam was already in his eighties this year, and aside from some heart problems, he was pretty healthy otherwise.
Even his heart condition wasn’t much of an issue for him–he had money, and the special medications he took were extremely expensive.
I figured if he spent enough money, he might actually achieve immortality.
I sneered inwardly but put on an obedient facade as I followed Caleb through the front door.
“Grandpa.” Caleb greeted him calmly.
I bowed and said, “Hello, Grandpa.”
Sam now had a cane in his hand. He looked me up and down and ke into a smile.
at look all too well, and it made me feel absolutely sick.
deb took two steps toward me, positioning himself to block Sam’s gaze from falling on me.
Sam withdrew his gaze, nodded, and pulled out a gift box to hand to me.

“Ruby, I’ve been away from America for years and haven’t seen much of you or given you any gifts. I’m sorry about that. This is a present I prepared for you. Don’t think I’m playing favorites with Mia.”
The sight of Sam’s outstretched hand disgusted me, and I didn’t want to accept the gift.
Mia came downstairs, still wearing long sleeves and pants.
“If Grandpa’s giving you a gift, you should accept it. He’ll be hurt if you don’t.”
She walked over and urged me, “Go ahead, take it.”
I gave in.
Just as I was about to reach out, another hand got there first and took the gift box from Sam.
Caleb opened the gift box, pulled out a bank card from inside, and chuckled softly. “Grandpa’s really generous. Grandpa, I’ll accept this on Ruby’s behalf.”
He prompted me, “Ruby.”
I quickly nodded. “Thank you, Grandpa.”
Sam acknowledged with a sound. “You didn’t grow up by my side, so you’re not familiar with me like Mia is.”

He patted the spot beside him. “Mia, come here.”

Mia hesitated for only a second before sitting down next to him.
Sam’s aged hand seemingly casually patted Mia’s thigh as he looked at me and said, “Ruby, you’re not as likeable as Mia. You haven’t smiled once since walking through the door.”
Looking at his face, I really couldn’t bring myself to smile–I actually wanted to hit him.
But I forced myself to smile anyway.
Sam stood up, leaning on his cane. “Caleb, come with me to the study. I have something to discuss with you.”
Caleb nodded at me, then helped Sam upstairs.
