Caleb just stood there, motionless, letting me vent my frustration on him.
I don’t know how long I kept hitting him until my arms were completely exhausted and I finally stopped.
“Feel better now?” Caleb sighed, pulling me into his arms again and gently patting my back. “I’ll never show you anything like that again.”
I nodded.
Caleb said, “I just wanted you to understand men’s true
nature. Look at how Grandpa treats Mia–that should tell you everything. Stay away from Sam from now on, don’t get close to any men, you hear me?”
I nodded again, then looked up at him and asked, “Aren’t you a good person either?”
Caleb chuckled at my question. “What do you think?”
I studied him carefully.
In my heart, Caleb had never been a good person.

“Ruby, I’m not a good person,” Caleb said, looking into my eyes. “But I’ll do everything I can to protect you and make sure you never get hurt.”
I shook my head. “You’re already a good brother.”
Caleb laughed softly.
“Your standards for a good brother are that low?”
I laughed too, feeling much more relaxed. “Then you should hold yourself to higher standards.”
Caleb took my hand and led me out of the study.
“Stay away from Mia. I’ll talk to your school and have her moved to a different dorm.”
“No.” I grabbed Caleb’s hand and stopped walking.
Caleb turned around. “She tried to hand you over to Grandpa tonight to be tormented, and you still consider her your sister?”
I said, “No. I stopped having a sister when I was eight years old. Now I only have you. But I need to keep an eye on her–it makes me feel safer. At worst, you can just assign someone to protect me.”
Caleb ruffled my hair again. “Alright. Now go get some sleep.”
