When I got home, Cassian was sitting on the couch smoking.
I frowned and walked over to snuff out his cigarette.
“Smoking so much–are you trying to suffocate me and the baby?” I tossed the cigarette butt aside.
Cassian’s head snapped up, then slowly lowered to look at my belly.[]
His voice trembled noticeably.
“Baby?” His eyes exploded with captivating joy. “Mine?”
My face darkened. “No, it’s a ghost’s.”
Cassian finally caught on and quickly pulled me down sit beside him.
His warm palm gently caressed my belly, so soft and careful.[]
Like I was precious treasure.]]
Watching his movements, my heart softened.[]
Cassian pulled me into his arms.[]
After a long while, just as I was getting impatient, I felt wetness dripping onto my neck.]
I stared at him wide–eyed. “Cassian, are you crying?“]
His body stiffened, his voice choked. “You’re the one crying!“[]
I laughed softly.
“Fine, I’m crying then.“[]

Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was our daughter’s one–month celebration.[]

“Grandfather mentioned you sent Nina and Tilly abroad?” I looked at him, my eyes

“Yes, I’ll send the child support I owe
each month. Beyond that, I can’t do anything more.”
I understood his reasoning.
After all, Nina was a woman who was not only venomous but would devour her own child.[]
If he let Tilly stay with her, the child would become Nina’s most useful tool.
After a moment of silence, I turned to leave.[]
“Madeline,” Victor handed me a small velvet pouch. “It’s
lavender and chamomile–supposed to help you sleep. Thought you might need it.“[]
I instinctively took it and smiled at him.
“Thank you.”
Seeing the peaceful expression on my face, Victor felt waves of dense, stabbing pain in his chest.[]
The pain made him unconsciously hunch over.[]
On the way home, fine rain began to fall from the sky again.
But this time, what awaited me wasn’t gloomy weather–it was a rainbow.
