The Family 7

The Family 7

Chapter 7

“We said we’d move out today! Don’t you dare go too far!” Dad’s roar filled the hallway as Sophia approached, chuckling lightly.

“Don’t mind me, Uncle. I’m just reclaiming my property. Thought I’d supervise to ensure you return my house promptly.”

I hadn’t realized she’d rushed from campus just to torment my parents. With red eyes, I demanded, “Just who said this. is yours? It’s mine. I’m the sole owner!”

Sophia tilted her head and spread her hands. “These were bought during your marriage. According to the divorce agreement, they don’t belong to you! You’ve been living off the Johnson family since marriage-am I wrong?”

Neighbors pointed fingers at my parents. “So this isn’t their place? They bragged about their daughter buying them a retirement home, but she just landed a wealthy husband.”

“True colors show now-getting what they deserve.”

Bodyguards behind Sophia shoved us outside. Mom’s freshly bandaged wound bled anew while Dad was pinned against the wall, taking punch after punch.

My brother and I coughed blood, clutching our ribs.

Leaning against the wall, Sophia dusted off her clothes with a laugh. “Don’t try faking injury! This outfit costs six fig- ures-you couldn’t afford it if you sold everything!”

The property management team finally arrived in uniform. Seeing the chaos before them, they hesitated for a mo- ment. Sophia immediately spoke up: “Hurry up and kick these people out of my house! They’re trespassing!”

The property team shielded us as they blocked the intruders: “Are you mistaken? They’ve been residents here for years.”

“This house was bought with my husband’s money, so isn’t it mine? If you don’t act now, I’ll call the police! Trespass- ing is illegal!”

“Fine, call the police!”

Hearing the police siren outside, I breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, when I contacted property management, I’d also reported the trespassing.

“I told you, I’m the only person on the property deed. This was bought outright with my pre-marital property. There’s

no issue here.”

“They came armed with tasers and knives! Look how they’ve beaten my whole family! I’m charging them with at-

tempted murder!”

Sophia waved dismissively: “No, officer, this is my family’s property! My husband’s!”

The room and hallway were under surveillance. The police didn’t listen to Sophia’s excuses, quickly taking us for statements while Sophia and the bodyguards were detained as suspects in the interrogation room.

“What evidence proves this is your husband’s property?”

“She hasn’t worked since marrying my husband, with zero income. This house was clearly bought with his money. Now that they’re divorced and she left with nothing, the property is rightfully mine.”

Back then, if Benjamin hadn’t said he couldn’t bear to see me exhausted from work, wanting to provide for me and keep me company, I’d never have turned down all those job offers to become a housewife.

My lips curled with contempt. “This house was fully paid for with my pre-marital property. Besides, my husband and I are still in the divorce cooling-off period, yet this woman has lived with him for years and even had children.”

“They’ve established a common-law marriage. I will sue them for bigamy!”

Sophia had assumed the house belonged to Benjamin and panicked, immediately demanding to call him for bail.

After her request, the officer spoke before hanging up:

“Sir, you’re suspected of marital infidelity and intentional assault. Please report to the precinct within 24 hours.”
