A Cheater 241

Chapter 241

Blanche’s lashes fluttered as the trending headlines flashed through her mind.

By now, probably everyone in Capitol City who had any connection with the McCarthy family knew about it.

“Marry me without worry. Be Mrs. McCarthy.”

His tone was earnest, even if his expression and voice sounded as calm as ever. Still, as he went on, a note of anticipation slipped through. “From now on, call me by my name.”

Blanche didn’t seem to notice anything unusual. She called softly, “Ablett.”

Her voice was clear and gentle, and when she spoke his name, it sounded beautiful. “Go on, get to work. Didn’t you say you found a lead?”

Ablett knew exactly what would snap her out of her daze.

Blanche remembered her investigation and immediately stood up, but before he could move aside, she bumped right into him. She stumbled back, and he caught her by the arm. Her forehead brushed lightly against his Adam’s apple.

She didn’t think much of it-it was just an accident.

But he paused for a few seconds, the corners of his mouth quirking into a rare, easy smile.

She sidestepped him and took over his desk. “Director-General, take a look at this…” The next second, Ablett’s smile faded.

Every time she called him that, it made him feel like some old man who didn’t

deserve her.

“I found that Pollock has an account in Capitol City. Every month, money gets wired from it to an overseas account. The recipient also has an account at the same bank here, with a pretty hefty balance. The bank’s fund manager handling his investments is this person.”

“Pollock’s in prison, and the account is right here in Capitol City. T means Kermit must have been running it before.” Blanche only thought to check on Pollock today

after seeing Kermit.

Ablett walked up behind her.

He leaned in, bracing his large hands against the desk, bending down to look at her laptop.

“I don’t know how they’re connected yet, but I’ve already hacked into both of their phones. We’ll have something soon.”

The more Blanche talked, the more animated she became. She looked up at Ablett, and just then, he lowered his head.

Her lovely eyes sparkled with excitement. Without realizing it, he found himself drawn in by her self-assured gaze.

Ablett kept his expression neutral. “Once you close this case, you’ll make a name for yourself here.”

What would she do with that kind of fame, anyway?

Blanche didn’t ask. She could hear people coming and going in the next room.

Before long, a doctor approached. “Director-General, Miss Griffiths, the child has a heart condition.”

Blanche’s hand clenched tight in an instant.

The doctor’s voice lingered near her ear. “He’s running a high fever, there’s inflammation. His father isn’t sure what medication he’s been given or if he has any allergies.”

“Azithromycin. He’s allergic to penicillin,” Blanche said softly, lowering her gaze.

Just like Mamie.

The doctor nodded. As he turned to leave, he hesitated, then added, “The boy has a lot of injuries, some new, some old. I suspect he’s being abused.”

Blanche’s face went pale with shock. She looked toward the doorway and locked eyes with Eddy’s fathomless, dark gaze.

She got up and walked toward him.

Eddy’s eyes brimmed with love, but before he could utter the word darling,”

Blanche’s hand flew across his face in a sharp slap. Her voice trembled with anger. “Are you even human?”
