Blanche’s face was blank, cold as stone. “This has nothing to do with you.
“You left me, and the moment you did, you went to another man and had his child?” Eddy’s voice shook with disbelief. How could he possibly accept this?
They’d been in love for ten years–an entire decade. How was it possible that she could leave Laney and immediately have a child with someone else?
Laney loved him. She would never betray him.
Blanche met Eddy’s gaze. All she could think of was the way Mamie’s eyes, the curve of her brow, echoed his features. Her heart, already bruised, ached all over again.
But Mamie was Mamie.
And Eddy was Eddy.
“You slept with Jeannette while we were still married and fathered an illegitimate daughter. Why shouldn’t I find someone else to love after leaving you–and have his child?” Blanche’s voice trembled, but she forced herself to meet his eyes, every word cutting like a cold blade.
“Darling, please–let me explain.”
how you
“Explain?” Blanche let out a bitter laugh. “Explain how you lied to me, manipulated everyone to keep me in the dark? How you stole what my mother left me? How you murdered my child without a shred of remorse?”
“Go ahead, Eddy. Tell me–explain it all.”
He couldn’t. The truth was, he’d done every single thing she accused him of.
He tried to pull her into his arms, speaking in that soft, coaxing voice he’d used so many times before. “Sweetheart, I’d never hurt you. Everything I did–I did for you.”
“Please, you have to believe me. No one could ever love you more than I do.”
Blanche bit down hard on his shoulder. The tighter he held her, the harder she bit.
They clung to each other in a silent, desperate struggle.
Suddenly, Eddy felt something warm and wet. He caught Blanche’s small hand–her palm was smeared with blood.
She’d bitten his shoulder, but her nails had dug deep into her own flesh.

He released her in a panic. “Honey.”
“If you’re angry, hit me, scream at me–just don’t hurt yourself.”
He was terrified–truly terrified.
“I don’t want to see you right now.”
Blanche collapsed on the hospital bed, clutching the bandaged hand against the pristine white sheet, leaving a bright red stain.
Her hair was a mess, her face deathly pale. She looked at him with eyes drained of hope, filled only with disgust.
“I’ll leave,” Eddy said, voice hoarse. He didn’t want to go, but he had to.
He stepped into the hallway and immediately took the tablet a guard handed him. The hospital room’s security feed flickered onto the screen.
Inside, Blanche lay on the bed, gasping for breath, lifeless.
Dr. Smith approached, voice grave. “Mr. Simmons, your wife’s trauma symptoms have relapsed.”
“This time, the trigger was you.”
The words shattered whatever hope Eddy had left.
He couldn’t see her again. If he pushed her any further, she’d do something he could never take back.
But how could he stand by and let her end up with another man? He simply couldn’t.
He paced back and forth outside her room, lost in thought, his face impossible to
read.
The head of his security detail hurried over. “Sir, the helicopter’s ready. We can evacuate Mrs. Simmons at any time.”
“But Ablett’s men have arrived.”
“There’s bound to be a violent confrontation. My team is ready to fight fou and your wife.”
Dr. Smith interjected, “Her condition is dangerously unstable. If she has an episode in the middle of all this… it could be catastrophic.”

“And there’s something else. After giving birth, Mrs. Simmons underwent immediate heart surgery. The procedure was a success, but her heart can’t take any more
trauma.”
“She can’t have another child. If she does, it’ll be fatal.”
“We have to keep a donor heart on standby–at all times.”
Eddy’s gaze darkened, eyes narrowing.
At that moment, Ablett appeared at the far end of the corridor.
The head bodyguard immediately sensed trouble. “Sir, those aren’t undercover agents–they’re regular police.”
The police moved in, clearing a path. Ablett’s secretary pointed straight at Eddy. “That’s the man who abducted our Director–General’s fiancée.”
An officer stepped forward, voice cold and official. “You are under arrest for kidnapping and unlawful detention.”
