14 Chapter 14
Albert stood frozen for a moment after I hung up on him.
Albert shoved his hand in the gap, blocking the door. It slammed on his fingers. He winced, tears of pain welling in his eyes, but his voice was firm. “I have to know where
she is.”
He had explained it a thousand times: Krista saved his mother’s life. He was repaying a debt. Why couldn’t Sherry just understand and support him?
It was the first time Sherry had ever hung up on him.
Albert froze. Sherry saved his mom’s life? He had no memory of that. “What? When did Sherry save my mom?!”
“Sherry saved your mom’s life too! Why aren’t you repaying her?”
“Well, well, if it isn’t my best friend’s ever-so-‘devoted’ ex-boyfriend. What desperate wind blew you in?”
But the anger was quickly replaced by a gnawing fear. He had never considered breaking up with Sherry. Now he had no idea where she was and no way to contact her. How was he supposed to find her?
He and Sherry had gone to her place once. He found the address and rushed over.
When Emma opened the door, she saw a haggard-looking Albert. She had always felt Sherry deserved better, but she hadn’t wanted to interfere while they were together.
He didn’t even know where she was. When he tried calling back, the line was dead.
Emma rolled her eyes. He’d been so cold to Sherry, and now that she was gone, he was pretending to care. “I don’t know.” She started to close the door.
In his desperation, he thought of Sherry’s best friend, Emma.
His mind went blank. She blocked him? She’d been angry before, but she’d never done this. Panic, laced with rage, surged through him. It was because of Krista!
Albert finally understood. Of course. Sherry’s friends didn’t approve either. But they didn’t get it! He was repaying his mother’s savior. He launched into the same

explanation he’d given everyone else.
She hadn’t explained anything.
After hearing what Albert had done, her resentment had hit its peak. She couldn’t believe a man like him existed. Seeing him now, her temper flared.
Emma snorted. “Sherry’s address? In your dreams. I’m not letting you go bother her.”
“Krista saved my mother’s life. It was a debt I had to repay. Just give me Sherry’s address. I can make her understand.”
Emma cursed, stunned by his desperation. “You’re about to have a baby with another woman, and you have the nerve to ask where Sherry is?”
He tried to send a message, but it failed to deliver.
Emma knew! Albert didn’t have time for this. He just wanted to find Sherry. “Where is Sherry?”
