20 Chapter 20

Even if Krista was in prison, this change in attitude made no sense.

My thoughts returned to the present. I wrapped my arm around Marcus’s waist and buried my face in his solid chest. “Don’t be mad, my handsome groom-to-be,” I

murmured against his chest.

His question was so ridiculous I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

This was the first time I’d ever experienced a man being jealous over me. When I was with Albert, his attitude was always one of indifference.

From the front seat, Emma and the others burst out laughing, saying they never knew I had this side to me and regretting not recording it. We had a great time at the new place. Afterward, Marcus and I lingered downstairs for a while before I went home.

Maybe that was the difference between being loved and not being loved.

A week went by, and he said nothing. Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore and asked him if he didn’t mind seeing me with another guy.

My words hit Albert like a thunderclap.

Now, the mere appearance of an ex-boyfriend made Marcus show his displeasure so clearly.

I had once tried to make him jealous just to get his attention. I deliberately conspired with another guy-we’d go to work together, have lunch together, even post pictures. I waited for Albert to ask me what was going on.

Did he really think my life revolved around him so much that I’d hire an actor just to spite him? His opinion was irrelevant.

When I opened the door to my apartment, my heart stopped. Albert was sitting on the sofa.

But now he was acting like he was deeply in love with me?

I immediately threw my hands up in surrender. “No, you’re the most handsome man in the world.”

Albert stood there, stunned, watching us leave.

He had always been so cold, no matter what I did for him.

But I was also confused.

I had once thought his heart was made of stone, impossible to warm.

As we passed Albert, he instinctively reached out and grabbed my sleeve.

“I’m sorry, but Marcus is my legitimate fiancé,” I said, “Our wedding is on the 18th of this month-ten days from now.”

I’ll never forget his answer. He just glanced at me coolly and said, “I don’t care.” Those three words were burned into my heart.

In the car, Marcus immediately let go of me, scooted over, and let out a cold huff. I laughed. He was obviously jealous.

Marcus feigned offense. “Are you saying I’m not handsome?”

But I had no feelings left for him. I ruthlessly shook him off and walked away, holding

Marcus’s hand.

Only Krista’s arrival had ever brought out his gentle side. Two years ago, I had chosen to step aside and let them be.

His eyes instantly turned red. He couldn’t accept it. He couldn’t accept that the woman he loved was going to marry another man!

But I had no more interest in getting tangled up with him. I wasn’t going to let an irrelevant person ruin my welcome-home party. I signaled for everyone to move to a different spot.

I tilted my head up, tracing his jawline with my fingertip. “I can’t very well kiss a pouting groom at the altar. Or… maybe you’d prefer I find another way to wipe that pout off your face right now?”
