22 Chapter 22

Albert’s words pulled me back to reality.

Albert looked at me, his red-rimmed eyes filled with regret, guilt, and frustration, but also a sliver of hope. He hoped that knowing the truth would make me forgive him, that we could go back to how things were. Unfortunately for him, he had miscalculated.

“It wasn’t until after you left… after you left, I found out…”

But now, Albert was claiming he liked me. A sarcastic smile touched my lips. “Are you sure you like me?”

“I can explain. I thought Krista was my mom’s savior, I never had any feelings for her,

we never even-”

I was genuinely surprised to hear that the “savior” incident was about the fire from six years ago. When Albert first introduced Krista to me, he never specified which time she had supposedly saved his mother.

Albert’s face went white, the light in his eyes dimming. My unwavering tone shattered his last shred of hope. He had waited two years, never imagining this would be the

outcome.

Albert saw my silence and probed cautiously, “Sherry, I didn’t let Krista have the baby. I already made her get an abortion. I know I was wrong now. Can we please go back to the way we were?”

He thought I would always love him.

Seeing Albert’s stubbornness, I was reminded of my own delusions during our relationship. He never once bought me a gift.

I’d just chalked up his coldness to his personality, believing I could change him one day.

His voice trembled as he asked, “Why? I do like you.”

Albert choked up, tears welling in his eyes. It took him a moment to compose himself. “The person who saved my mom in the fire… it was you. I got the wrong person.”

22 Chapter 22

He wasn’t clingy like other boyfriends. He never said “I love you.” But back then, I was convinced he loved me. Why else would he have agreed to date me?

Before I could answer, his expression became agitated.

And after I woke up in the hospital that year, I had deliberately avoided mentioning that night in front of Albert. That’s how the misunderstanding happened. Even though I was over it now, I couldn’t help but marvel at the cruel twist of fate.

It took Krista’s arrival to shatter my pathetic self-deception and force me to face the

truth.

I shook my head without a moment’s hesitation. “That’s impossible.”
