26 Chapter 26

Marcus met my father’s gaze, his own unwavering. “I promise you, sir. I will cherish her for the rest of my life.”

And how much pain she must have felt when she decided to cancel it all.

After the wedding, I was busy seeing guests off.

In a corner, Albert clapped, his eyes locked on Sherry.

I placed the letter aside and went to find my husband.

I’m sorry. I’m not ready to let you go completely, but I know we don’t have a future. You were right, we both need to move on. I’m going to try and find my own path now.

The guests erupted in thunderous applause and cheers, everyone sending their blessings to the new couple.

Lastly, please forgive my cowardice for not being able to offer you my blessings in person. I hope the rest of your life is filled with joy and wonder.”

The five years we were together were the happiest of my life, and I will never forget

them.

The ceremony began. I walked down the aisle on my father’s arm, towards Marcus. My father placed my hand in Marcus’s. “I’m entrusting my daughter into your care.”

marriage.”

She patted my shoulder and walked away.

Many guests came to the wedding. My director and colleagues from the research center, even those on vacation, all made the trip.

I then remembered that Albert had said he would come to the wedding, but I hadn’t seen him. I opened the letter and began to read.

I agreed. That evening, I had an invitation and a box of chocolates sent to Albert’s room. He unwrapped a piece of chocolate and slowly put it in his mouth. It felt like it

had been a long time since he’d tasted anything sweet.

“Good job, son!” my director boomed, clapping Marcus on the shoulder. “You finally won our Sherry’s heart. You’re a lucky man!”

Then came the vows, the exchange of rings, and the kiss.

He owed Sherry a debt he could never repay. Now that she had found her happiness, the least he could do was be happy for her.

My colleagues all cheered and teased. Looking at the man beside me in his black suit, I felt so happy I could burst.

I had already begun my new life. And Albert, it was time for him to start his own. The past was the past. The future was now.

He suddenly thought of the wedding that never happened two years ago. He imagined Sherry meticulously planning every detail of that day. The venue, the dress, the reception… she must have compared countless options before making her choices.

Only after meeting Marcus did I understand what unconditional love was.

Albert closed his eyes, letting a single, bitter tear slide down his cheek.

“Sherry,
