Back in his room, Kellan’s mind wouldn’t quiet down.
Faces swam in his thoughts, but for some reason, they all kept merging into one.
Kellan’s eyes snapped open, a thin layer of cold sweat on his forehead as his expression shifted.”
The woman in the Bauta mask had a strange hold on him, her image constantly sparking his curiosity.
And her words, ‘Be careful of Kyle, echoed in his head.
‘If a total stranger could see it, there’s no way Dad is completely blind to it, Kellan thought..
But he was, wasn’t he? Blinded by the last shred of family affection, unable to bring himself to act.
Fine. If his father couldn’t do what needed to be done, Kellan didn’t mind handling it for him.
Just then, his phone rang. Kellan answered with a hint of impatience.
Hayden Grayson’s voice was full of curiosity, and he cut right to the chase. “Kellan, what’s the situation? How’s your father?”
“He’s awake. Seems to be fine.”
“That’s good–wait! What did you say? He’s awake? No way!”
For the first time, Hayden questioned his own medical expertise. Had he really become so incompetent that he’d misjudged Patrick’s condition?
Kellan’s voice remained steady, repeating his words without a trace of emotion.
A dark cloud seemed to settle over Hayden, and he fell silent.
But Kellan seemed to have found his voice. “I need you to look into someone for me.”
“Dude, I’m a doctor, not a private eye.”
“Getting tired of medicine?” Kellan’s low voice took on a deeper, more imposing tone. “Maybe it’s time you went home to take over the family business.”
That shut Hayden up instantly. “Fine, fine. I get it,” he said, resigned. “Who am I looking for?”
“The Sinclair family’s eldest daughter, Zina Sinclair.”
“Well, well. Is the great Kellan Carter finally developing a heart?”
The moment he heard it was a woman, Hayden’s interest was piqued.
Everyone has their moments of weakness.
Kellan’s gaze sharpened, his voice turning colder.

“I think you really do want to go home.”
“Okay, okay, my bad! I’ll look into her, alright?”
As Hayden spoke, Kellan could hear the sound of stifled snickering on the other end of the line.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, his thoughts finally settling.
He’d seen everything that happened at the hospital that day.
But all this time had passed, and there had been no word from Zina. Had the Sinclairs taken her back again?
He shook his head, pushing the thoughts from his mind and forcing himself to focus on his work.

Outside, the sun seemed to burn even brighter.
Zina looked out the window, the brilliant sunshine lifting her spirits.
Chris’s voice came through the phone.
“Boss, it’s been too long. I checked the traffic cam footage from back then, but it’s completely corrupted. The good news is, there must have been eyewitnesses. Our people are looking for them now.”
“Okay.” Zina’s voice was calm as she skimmed a document, her focus returning. “Send me the video file. I’ll see if I can do anything with it.”
“Right, I’m emailing it to you now.”
Chris was always efficient. A few seconds later. Zina opened her inbox to find a video file so corrupted it was practically unusable.
She let out a long breath, frowning slightly. “Just work as fast as you can. I’ll handle the Sinclair family.”
