“The doctor’s face stiffened, and he swatted at the small hand reaching for the door.
“You little brat. Are you trying to pull a fast one because I called you out? Who are your parents? I’d love to see who raised such an ill–mannered kid.”
“Funny you should ask. How did you know we don’t have a mother?”
Another voice, ice–cold and heavy with authority, cut through the air.
The doctor started to panic before he even saw the speaker, forcing himself to remain calm.
Just then, the man who had spoken walked into view.
He was slender, with a faint scent of herbs about him. His skin was unusually pale, but not in a sickly way,
Zina found herself instinctively diagnosing him. ‘Chronic illness, she thought. But she knew she couldn’t be sure without a proper examination.
“Mr. Zalton,” the newcomer said, his voice flat. “Don’t you recognize me?”
Jason Zalton’s lips trembled. He couldn’t seem to form any words.
“Mr… Mr. Miles, he stammered. “Is this young man your…
“My brother,” Miles Quinn said, his gaze chilling “From what I heard, what exactly did my brother do?”
“Mr. Miles, it’s all a misunderstanding. I had no idea he was a Quinn…
Jason wanted the ground to swallow him whole. He’d only met Miles Quinn once before, when accompanying his father to a private consultation for Miles’s health issues. If Miles hadn’t been a recluse due to his condition, Jason never would have had the chance.
And now this disaster. Everything was ruined.
His world came crashing down. Jason scrambled out of the ambulance and dropped to his knees in front of Miles, his voice shaking.
“Mr. Miles, I’m so sorry. I was blind. Please, don’t hold this against me.
He then turned to Cain, pleading.
“Young Mr. Cain, I was trying to help you. It was this woman! She was stirring up trouble.”
Zina, suddenly thrown under the bus, blinked in surprise as three pairs of eyes locked onto her.
She gave a wry smile, about to speak, but Cain beat her to it. “Mister, you shouldn’t tell lies. I was on the ground, but I’m not deaf. You were the one giving this lady a hard time.”
“Young sir, you’ve got it all wrong.” Jason whined, on the verge of tears.

He kept his voice low and placating, desperate not to anger Miles any further.
Finally, Miles, tired of the spectacle, gave a dismissive wave.
“Mr. Zalton, this ambulance is blocking the street.
way?”
y don’t you apologize to this young lady, and then you can be on)
“Yes, of course, right away.” Jason breathed a sigh of relief, forcing a smile as he turned to Zina.
“Miss, there seems to have been a misunderstanding. I apologize. I’m truly sorry. Please forgive me!
Zina looked at the man’s groveling expression and frowned.
“An attending physician at Metropolis General Hospital, she thought. ‘Pathetic‘
Just go,” she said flatly.
Seeing that Zina had nothing more to say, Miles waved the man away.
As the ambulance sped off, the slight smile on Miles’s face vanished.
“Thank you for helping my brother,” Miles said, his tone shifting to something warmer. “I apologize for the trouble he’s
caused.”
The smile was gentle, but for some reason, Zina felt an inexplicable aversion to him. She didn’t want to get close, so she just gave a curt nod..
“It was nothing. A doctor’s duty. The boy seems fine now, so I’ll be going.”
Zina turned to leave, but a small hand grabbed hers.
“Miss, don’t go. You’re so pretty! I have three older brothers, and none of them are married. You should pick one:
The boy grew more excited with every word, finally shoving Miles forward.
“Look, this is my brother Miles. He’s probably around your age. You two should get to know each other. He’s really handsome, and he does whatever I say…
Seeing his little brother was about to spill every family secret, Miles finally snapped. He tapped Cain on the head and clamped a hand over his mouth.
Ignoring Cain’s muffled struggles, he smiled apologetically at Zina. Tm sorry, miss. He’s just a kid. Please don’t mind him.”
“It’s fine. Kids say the darndest things,” Zina replied, already turning to leave, uninterested in the family drama.“
Once Zina was out of sight, Miles finally let go of Cain, his expression turning serious.
“Miles, what was that for? I was trying to find myself a sister–in–law. She’s so pretty”
“That’s enough, Cain. You don’t need to worry about me. I know my own situation. I can’t drag a good woman into it.”
Cain looked down, pressing his lips together in silence.

After a few seconds, he clenched his fists, looked up at his brother, and said with determination, “You’re going to get better, Miles.
“Yeah, okay. I believe you,” Miles said, his voice soft.
A faint, gentle smile touched his lips as he looked at Cain.
A flicker of hope in his eyes was just as quickly extinguished, replaced by a deep, familiar darkness.
‘Get better?’ he thought. After all these years? It’s probably a lost cause.”
Silence hung between them. Seeing his brother’s pout, Miles took his hand.
“Come on, let’s get you cleaned up. And don’t run off like that again. You know you’re not well. What if something happened?”
Cain mumbled a quiet “okay, letting Miles lead him by the hand toward Skyline Plaza.
Back at the hospital, Jason Zalton finally let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding, muttering curses under his breath.
“That bitch, getting me into trouble like that. Thinks she’s so smart. Damn her.
“Next time I see her, I’ll make her pay for messing with me. Bitch. They’re all bitches.”
“Mr. Zalton.”
A voice cut him off. He stopped muttering and turned to face the young nurse who had approached him, “What is it?”
“The vice president wants to see you. It sounded important
The nurse paused, glanced around to make sure they were alone, and then added in a hushed tone, “You should probably hurry. He’s furious. I mean, really, really angry.”
Jason’s brow furrowed. “Alright, I’m on my way.”
He stopped outside the office door, startled by the sound of something crashing inside.
The door flew open. The vice president, his face red and his neck muscles bulging, saw Jason standing there.
“You! You have the nerve to show your face? Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
