Zina could sense the complicated history behind his words, but remained silent as he continued.
“It’s a long story. The Quinns have suffered greatly. Lady Quinn was already weak when she gave birth right in the middle of
a family power struggle. The second branch paid the nanny to drug her, resulting in a sickly child who’s been fighting for life ever since. Raising the child to this age hasn’t been easy, to say the least.
Wade pieced together the Quinn family’s history–each revelation dragging Zina deeper into shadow, her expression. hardening with every word.
“I see.”
Zina sighed. A pale, frail little face appeared in her mind,
No wonder every time she met that man, she always noticed a strange scent on him. Now she realized it was that faint aroma of herbal medicine.
He must have been steeped in it for years, she thought, sighing
“The Quinn family truly hasn’t had it easy. But tell me, is that the only reason you’re staying here?”
Wade shook his head. “Not exactly. I’m looking into someone
“Who? Zina held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest.
Wade’s eyes flickered. Then he turned to face her and asked, “You’re this interested. Are you searching for someone too?”
“No.” Zina shook her head. After that, Wade showed no intention to continue, only sighing incessantly in lament.
“The Quinns are cursed with misfortune
Zina didn’t know how to respond, so she chose silence.
Her phone buzzed back to life, snapping her out of her thoughts.
She picked it up this time. On the other end, the man’s voice was laced with displeasure. “Why haven’t you been picking up?
Zina didn’t know what to say.
“Get over to the mansion. Patrick’s not doing well–he just collapsed a moment ago.
Only then did she recognize Kellan’s voice. Her scowl deepened–she wasn’t some servant to come running
She was just about to refuse, but then Patrick’s kind face flashed through her mind.
Ultimately, she couldn’t bring herself to retort. With a resigned sigh, she said. “Fine, I’ll be there shortly.”
Hanging it up, Zina huffed and kicked a pebble by the roadside.
Watching the pebble roll away, she felt an indescribable irritation well up inside her.

It was downright frustrating.
“Something’s come up, so I’ll take my leave for now. I’ll catch up with you later.
She stopped and blinked at Wade.
Wade sighed and stepped aside, waving at her. “Just remember this old man when you can, kid. We’ll have plenty of time to catch up.”
*****Seated in the car, Zina closed her eyes. A swirl of thoughts filled her mind, all eventually crystallizing into the image of Kellan’s stern, inscrutable gaze.
She found him truly impossible to read.
Snapping back to reality as the car came to a halt, she adjusted her mask before heading toward the Carter mansion,
Kellan had been waiting there. The moment he saw Zina approaching, the hardness in his gaze melted away.
“Doctor, you’re here. About earlier on the phone–my tone was out of line. Hope you didn’t take it personally.”
“Never mind” Zina waved it off, her gaze drifting into the distance with a troubled frown. “What happened to Patrick? Is his health acting up again?”
“Yes, let’s head up and check on him.”
Kellan headed straight upstairs and paused at the door on the third–floor landing.
His fingers hovered over the doorknob, yet he couldn’t bring himself to turn it
