Rosie clenched her jaw, shooting Kellan a venomous look. As she did, she spotted the Bauta–masked figure lurking nearby from her peripheral vision.
“What’s this quack doctor still doing here? Can’t even treat a basic case, yet has the gall to just sit there like royalty?”
She unleashed her pent–up humiliation all on Zina, too angry to notice the other woman’s faint look of pity.
Hardly had Rosie finished speaking when Kellan slowly rose from his seat, his voice cold. I had no idea my dear nephew’s kept woman would dare to cause trouble in my own house. You’ve been doing quite well in my absence, Kyle.”
Kellan closed in on him step by step, and with just a single glance, he nearly scared Kyle out of his wits.
“Uncle Kellan, you’ve got it all wrong. Rosie’s always been kind–hearted. She only spoke out of her concern for Grandpa
“Is that so?” Kellan sneered. “I don’t recall telling you about Grandpa’s condition. Where did you hear this? And since your woman dared to insult the Doctor I invited, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
Kellan lifted his gaze, locking eyes with Kyle in a silent standoff.
In a split second, Kyle’s bravado deflated. “Uncle Kellan, I just heard about it on the way. Rosie’s naturally kind–hearted. She didn’t mean it. Can we just let it slide this time?”
Kellan narrowed his eyes, turning to Zina. “What do you say?”
Zina was still relishing their unfolding drama and was a little taken aback.
As the implication of Kellan’s words sank in, her brows furrowed slightly.
It seemed Kellan just handed her the authority to punish Rosie.
She followed Kellan’s gaze–just in time to catch Rosie’s signature wounded–doe expression.
Playful mischief dancing in her eyes, she arched a brow. “Mr. Carter, aren’t you going to make your presence known? After all, you’ve just come back–people might start thinking the Carter family has forgotten about you”
Rosie cried out, bating her lip hard in a pitiful manner. “You’re just trying to turn him against us!”
But no one spared her a glance of sympathy or comfort.
Her heart sank, and she turned to Kyle, but he only gave her a fleeting look of pity and remained silent, offering no help in her defense.
Overwhelming panic seized her as she gulped repeatedly, her throat dry with fear.
The very next second, her exposed skin erupted in angry, spreading red blotches.
“Ah! What’s happening?” she shrieked.
The red blotches radiated searing heat. Rosie clawed at them frantically, but it was no use, and she ended up wailing in helpless agony.

“What a disgusting screech. Zina murmured, brushing off imaginary dust from her clothes.
Catching Kyle watching her out of the corner of her eye, she curved her lips into a provocative smile.
“Already forgotten, Mr. Kyle Carter? Wouldn’t it be nice to have your precious Rosie share that ‘fun‘ you just had? After all, she’s the one you care about most.”
Kyle clenched his fists tightly but dared not make another move, his pleading eyes fixed helplessly on Kellan.
“Uncle Kellan,” Kyle pleaded, “we’re still family after all. Isn’t it going too far to let an outsider run wild in our own home?”
“An outsider? How could she be? She’s our family’s savior.”
Hearing that, Kellan rose to his feet, his gaze abruptly shifting toward the second floor.
Dread crept into Kyle’s chest. His mind became a chaotic void, filled only with static–nothing else remained.
At that very moment, an authoritative voice–one that had been silent for so long–finally rang out, its commanding tone sending chills down everyone’s spines.
“The Doctor has saved my life twice. She is, without question, the savior of the Carter family”
As the voice echoed through the hall, a long–unseen, venerable figure appeared at the top of the grand staircase, leaning heavily on an ornate cane as he descended with deliberate, commanding steps.
