Chapter 3
All three of us were in good health and were quickly discharged from the hospital.
Jackson needed to return to manage his farm operations.
As the wife of a Navy Captain, I had previously accompanied Harvey during his long deployment on the island. After discharge, I returned to the military family housing area.
While tidying up the house, I thought to myself: “Thanksgiving is coming up, and Harvey has safely recovered and come home. This would be perfect timing to invite his soldiers over to celebrate together. These young men are so far from home, and while everyone else is celebrating the holidays, they’re still here protecting everyone’s safety. I should prepare a warm holiday gathering for them.”
With this thought, I turned to look at Harvey, who was sitting on
the couch.
Before I could speak, I saw Harvey looking at me with a moved
expression.
I said, “Harvey, how about we invite the soldiers over for Thanksgiving dinner?”
Hearing my words, Harvey looked down with a smile and said, “Whatever you decide is fine.”

Though he didn’t say much, I could tell he really approved of the
idea.
And so, it was settled.
What I didn’t expect was that on Thanksgiving Day, not only did his soldiers come, but Ruby tagged along as well.
Watching me bustling around in the kitchen, she offered to help with her words but kept her distance physically.
Ruby looked toward the living room where the soldiers were eating, drinking, chatting, and laughing boisterously, her eyes showing clear impatience.
Soon, everyone had eaten their fill, and the house was left in complete disarray.
Harvey was seeing the guests off while I began cleaning up
mess.
the
Ruby, however, sat leisurely without any intention of helping.
When she saw Harvey return after seeing off the guests, she coquettishly approached and linked her arm through his: “Harvey, I…”
Before she could finish, Harvey pulled his arm free from her grasp and frowned at her, saying, “Violet has been busy all day.

After saying this, he ignored her and came over to help me clean
- up.
Ruby still clung to his arm, saying, “You can’t blame me for this, Harvey, I wanted to help earlier, but Violet wouldn’t let me.”
Seeing her like this, I thought to myself: “I never said you couldn’t help. You were the one who pinched your nose and stayed far away before I could even say anything. What could I do about it? But it doesn’t matter–as long as those soldiers enjoyed themselves today, it’s worth it even if I’m a bit tired.”
Hearing my thoughts, Harvey’s expression changed.
Finally, as if he’d reached his limit, he said, “If there’s nothing else, you should head home early. I still need to help Violet clean up.”
At these words, a flash of malice crossed Ruby’s eyes.
She said, “Harvey, are you angry with me just because I didn’t help Violet? But Violet was just thinking to herself that if it weren’t for these damn soldiers, she wouldn’t have had to work so hard for so long. She was even complaining in her heart about you bringing them home.”
Ruby said these words in a wheedling tone while tugging at Harvey’s sleeve.

Hearing her words, I pinched my thigh hard. Instantly, my eyes turned red and tears fell as I looked at Harvey without saying a
word.
I couldn’t help thinking: “Why would Ruby falsely accuse me like this? That’s not what I was thinking at all. Harvey hasn’t said anything yet he must be more inclined to believe Ruby. After all, they grew up together.”
With these thoughts, I lowered my head and fell completely
silent.
In my previous life, after Ruby said such things, Harvey looked at me with eyes full of disappointment. Though I wanted to explain, I was too angry at his lack of trust in me, so I said nothing.
This time, I again said nothing.
But Harvey’s expression was extremely dark.
Seeing Harvey’s reaction, Ruby became even more smug, thinking Harvey had believed her words.
She smiled and said, “Harvey, don’t be too angry. It’s normal for women to have some temper. Besides, Violet is our lifesaver. But if it were me, I definitely wouldn’t act this way. These soldiers work so hard–as long as they’re happy, it’s worth it even if I’m tired and work a little harder.”

Hearing these words that were almost identical to thoughts, I couldn’t help but blink, while Harvey actually scoffed.
The way he looked at Ruby no longer held the gentle affection one shows a sister, but was instead filled with disgust.
Harvey said coldly, “Ruby, have you ever considered that you might not be the only one who can hear what Violet is thinking? Perhaps I can hear it too? Have you thought about the consequences of randomly fabricating lies about Violet?”
Hearing his words, I looked up at them both with feigned surprise.
Ruby’s face had turned pale, and she stared at Harvey in disbelief.
