Chapter 50: Finally Out

Cassandra’s POV

Cassandra!Dillon exclaimed. Are you okay? Are you hurt? His eyes anxiously scanned my body

No, I’m fine,I said, looking up at him. I was relieved that the doors were finally open. But he was above me. Which meant the elevator was dangerously between two floors. My heart sank. The doors were open but I still had to get out

Just stay there,Dillon instructed. “The maintenance crew is here with me. They’re going to help you out.”

I was happy to see Dillon, but I suddenly wondered what he was doing there. This was Jordyn’s company’s office building. It seemed awfully coincidental that Dillon just happened to be there at the same time I got trapped in an elevator

What are you doing here?I asked. Dillon flashed me a sinile

Don’t worry about that right now. I’ll explain later,he told me in a voice that left no room for arguing. Let’s get you out of there first, okay?”

I nodded

Do you think there’s enough room to pull her out?Dillon asked whoever was behind him. An unfamiliar face appeared. His eyes scanned me and the hen looked at the doors. I finally got a good look at the predicament I was in

The elevator was close to the floor, but it wasn’t all the way there. The space between the door and the floor was only about four feet high. Dillon and the other man must have been on their hands and knees

I also realized that if the elevator had broken down even a few moments later, I’d be completely stuck between the floors. It would have been much harder to get me out if that had happened

Yes,the unfamiliar man said. You can pull her out safely. There’s enough room.”

Wait! What if the elevator moves?I blurted out

I suddenly had a vision of myself being pulled out through the space and the elevator suddenly moving. If the elevator shifted, my body would be caught between the elevator and the floor. I’d be crushed

It won’t,the man assured me. But I wasn’t so sure. It seemed really dangerous. The elevator had broken down without warning. What if it started up again

Dillon, I’m scared,I confessed. I don’t like this.”

I know,Dillon said. It looks scary. But we have to get you out of there and this is the only way.”

Dillon fixed me with his calm, green eyes. He didn’t look worried at all

The elevator is locked, the man said, his voice confident. It can’t go anywhere. I promise. This is my job. I’m an elevator mechanic. You’re perfectly safe.”

I looked again to Dillon. He nodded reassuringly

He knows what he’s doing,Dillon smiled warmly at me. I’m going to reach down. Take my hands, okay? And I’ll help you up.”

I was hesitant. But I trusted Dillon. If he said it was safe, then it was. I knew he’d never put me in any sort of danger. I nodded

Dillon positioned himself onto his stomach

He reached down and I clasped his strong, warm hands. The moment his hands met mine I felt instantly better

Okay, on the count of three,he said. I nodded. One, two,his hands tightened on mine. Three! He gave a good, h grunting at the effort. But he managed to pull me up. I landed on my stomach though, half in and half out of the elevator, with my legs dangling in the air. Several hands reached for me and pulled me all the way out

Dillon helped me up onto my feet. The people all around us applauded. It was quite the crowd that had gathered. I didn’t blame thern. I probably would have come to watch, too. It’s not every day someone is rescued from a brokendown elevator

You did it!Dillon said, a wide smile on his face. He held me at armslength and inspected me, making sure I was all right. I was still a little dazed by the ordeal, but other than that, I was perfectly fine

That was awful,I sighed. Now that I was out, I was starting to process the whole ordeal. I couldn’t believe that happened! Had I really just been stuck, all alone, in an elevator? It felt like something that only happened in movies

And Dillon? I still didn’t understand what Dillon was doing here

Dillon gathered me in his arms, hugging me tightly. I hugged him back, letting the familiar scent of his expensive cologne fill my nose. His arms were strong. His chest pressed against mine. I could feel his heart beating

I was worried,he said. I could hear the relief in his voice

I was, too,I chuckled

It was then that I saw Jordyn over Dillon’s shoulder. His expression was dark. Our eyes locked

I’m sorry,he said quietly. I never would have let you take the elevator if I’d known that would happen. His voice was low and quiet

It HAD been Jordyn’s voice I’d heard. He was watching Dillon and I a scowl on his face

Nonsense,I said. It’s not your fault. It was an accident.”

Dillon released me, but his hand remained on my shoulder. Jordyn’s eyes fell on Dillon’s hand

Jordyn glared at Dillon’s hand resting on my shoulder, and I could see the contempt in his eyes. and stayed there
