“Yes.” He said as we approached the elevator, and waited for me to enter as he pushed the top button out of two on the console. It must be a private elevator, seeing as it only had the top and bottom floor options. He didn’t say anything more until we entered his office, when he told me to sit at the small desk next to his.
His desk was made of beautiful California redwood, and stood tall and strong. Once he sat at the desk, it looked small and frail with him behind it. My desk was much smaller, but made out of the same materials. Once he sat, he started looking through a stack of paperwork, and typing into his laptop. His long slender fingers flew over the keyboard so quickly, my eyes couldn’t keep up.
There was a brand–new laptop placed on my desk, as well as a pad of paper and a pen. He spent a lot of money, and time having someone put this together just since last night. Upon seeing what he’d done for me, I felt so much worse about what I said to him. I knew buying me a brand–new laptop and expensive desk was nothing to him, but the thought behind it is what touched me. He was excited for me to spend real time with him, and it showed. But I went and fucked everything up by acting like an immature bitch. 4
I opened my laptop and started and instant message conversation with my best friend, Valerie. She was the only one who knew everything about me, including Damien. The only thing she didn’t know, is that Damien is a vampire. I couldn’t tell her that no matter how much I wanted to. (1
‘Val, I fucked up.‘ I sent to her.
‘Why? What’s wrong?‘ she responded immediately. I knew she would be online, it’s a weekend after all.
‘I said something bad and now he’s upset.‘
‘You managed to upset Damien Edge?? Tell. Me. Everything!‘ was her response. So I told her everything, from when he first came to my house, until I started the conversation with her. Omitting the fact that he killed Jacob, of course. I just told her that he made him leave.
Bast, even I have to admit, saying rape was definitely crossing the line, I’m sorry if you hate me for siding with him on that.‘ 3

Chapter 9
‘No I don’t hate you, I agree. That’s why I feel like shit, because I said it without thinking
about it.‘
‘Make it up to him.‘ was her response.
‘Well no shit, Val. But how?‘
‘Lock the door and break in your new desk. He can afford a new one, I mean nearly twenty
years without sex, you know he will literally break in that desk‘ she sent back with a couple of winking emojis.
I gasped aloud, alerting Damien as he stopped typing and looked up at me with a quizzical look.
“Sorry, Val said something surprising.” I said to him. He nodded and went back to typing, without a word. Damien knew of Valerie, he’d actually met her before, about a year ago. Every six months, Damien would come to see me, to see if my parents had broken their promise, and tried to harm me in any way.
After a few times of him coming to check on me, I finally asked him why. “Are you like a vampire guardian angel? Why do you come and check on me every six months?”
He responded with: “The night I made the deal with your parents, your father tried to sell you for one night. And when I told him I wanted you for good, he threatened to poison you. I keep a constant watch on you, but I have to make sure those scum don’t kill you before I can have you.” 2
He told me this as he drove me home from school. When we arrived back at the house, he spoke again: “Bast, you need to be careful. They have already tried to sell you since I laid claim on you. The only reason I don’t kill those worthless blood bags, is because you deserve to be raised by your real parents.”
