Chapter 20
“There is nothing wrong with you, Bast. You’re a human who was pushed too far.” He responded reassuringly as he took my hand and kissed it softly. “What you did was pure instinct, and nothing less.”
“I’m confused about something else though, something you made me think about at the office, and again in the park,” I said after taking a few bites of my omelet.
“It’s about me not having sex with you, isn’t it?” He asked with a chuckle, shaking his head. “No. When I made you think I was going to take you, yesterday morning, I wasn’t
going to. I was just proving a point.”
“The point of proving that what I was doing wasn’t fair to you. I know.” I responded,
drinking the rest of my tea. “The promise you made to me when I was six, it’s that
important to you?” 1
“Of course it is kitten. Any promise I make to you will always be of utmost importance to
me.”
“Why do you call me kitten?” I asked him after finishing my food and pushing the plate to the side.
“Because you have eyes like a kitten, you’re small like one, you have the curiosity of one, and I like the way you purr.” He responded honestly as he leaned back in the booth, watching me intently with a smug smile. He knew what I was about to ask him, but instead of just answering, he wanted me to ask it first.
“When do I purr?” I asked him, my curiosity got the best of me and I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it until I received the answer. He knew this, and he seemed to enjoy piquing my curiosity, just to sate it.
“When you’re enjoying yourself.”
“Did you ever watch me… enjoying myself?” I asked, feeling exposed.
“No, kitten. I wouldn’t do that. But I heard you, not just while I was watching afar. Remember you purred for me in the woods the other night, yesterday morning, in my office, and the shower.” he said as he paid the bill and took my hand, leading me back to the car.

He received a phone call from whom I guessed was Sam, based on how incredibly short the call was. The man on the other line spoke quickly, waited for Damien’s “Very good,”
then the call ended.
“If your hearing is so good, doesn’t it hurt to hold the phone to your ear?” I asked as he
drove us towards his house.
“No, I’ve had a lot of practice at it. But speaking of phones, I need to buy you a new one,” he said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ball of glass and metal, showing it to me. “Did you leave it here on purpose?”
“Yes,” I responded, taking it with a blush as I looked over at him shyly.
“You knew I would text you, see that you left your phone in my car, and come back to your house to give it to you. It was a damn good thing you did, otherwise, you might have been…” He trailed off, not wanting to say it out loud. If I hadn’t purposely left my phone in his car, he wouldn’t have come back to my house. Those men would have raped me and I would be dead. “But why did you do it?” He asked, looking over at me.
“I was too nervous to ask you to spend the night with me, but I knew if I left my phone then you would come to my window to give it to me. Why did you crush it into a ball like this?”
“When I saw that man on top of you, that phone was the least of my worries.” He responded as we arrived at his house. I wasn’t surprised at all when I looked out of the window to see a mansion in front of me.

It looked like a castle, surrounded by dense forest all around. If you didn’t know where it was, you would never find it.
“I had a few changes made for you, kitten. I wanted to make sure you’d like it here.” Damien said as he picked me up, holding me in his arms as he carried me over the threshold. He set me down but held onto my hand as I looked around.
