I rushed through the corridors of the pack house, head down, hoping to avoid unnecessary encounters. The last thing I needed was someone noticing my red–rimmed eyes or asking why the Queen Luna was wandering alone, clearly upset. My destination was clear -Frost’s quarters in the east wing. I needed someone who wouldn’t look at me with disgust or pity, someone who might understand.
Turning a corner, I nearly collided with the one person I least wanted to see.
*Please, Elowen, let’s talk,” my mother said, reaching for my arm.
I stepped back, avoiding her touch. “I do not need to talk to you right now; let me go.”
Her eyes were pleading, her face drawn with what seemed like genuine remorse. “You were right, I didn’t want you with him, I was never okay with that and so I knew telling you the truth would end what you both had, if only I knew how bad I was hurting you in the process. I acted selfishly but I think I have a solution.”
“No, you don’t; the only things you can come up with are more problems, and I am fed up. I am sick and tired of you.” The words came out harsher than I’d intended.
“Hear me out. I read about this thing called a DNA test; the healers could do that; maybe you should check…”
I froze, my anger momentarily forgotten. “So, does this mean you are unsure about my relationship with…”
“No, I am sure.” She backtracked quickly.
“Then what is the need for that?”
“I thought…”
“Stop, alright.” I cut her off, unwilling to let hope take root prematurely. “When I said I didn’t want to see you for some long, long time, I meant it. I need space, I need time away from you, and that is the least you can do for me right now.”
Without waiting for her response, I continued toward Frost’s quarters.
When I reached Frost’s door, I hesitated briefly before knocking. The door opened to reveal a young woman with silver–blonde hair similar to Frost’s, her eyes widening when she saw me.
“Oh. Good day, Luna,” she said, immediately lowering her eyes respectfully.
My heart sank. Of course, Frost would have moved on and found someone else. Why had I thought I could simply show up at his door after everything?
“Uhmm, hi. Is Frost in?” I managed to ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Oh, yes, he is,” she replied, stepping aside to reveal Frost approaching from an inner room.
“Elowen,” he said, surprise evident in his tone.
“Am I interrupting something?” I asked, unable to keep the edge from my voice.
The woman glanced between us. “No, I was just about leaving.”
“Elowen,” Frost said, his expression softening as the woman slipped past me into the corridor. “Clara is my cousin.”
“Oh. Oh.” Relief washed through me, followed immediately by embarrassment. “I thought…”

“I know what you thought; it was written clearly on your face.”
“Was it that obvious?‘ Heat rushed to my cheeks.
“It wasn’t.”
“I never knew you had a cousin,” I said, desperate to change the subject.
“I do, though in the same pack, I rarely see her.”
“I don’t think I gave her a good first–time impression.”
“You shouldn’t be worrying about that, Elowen, so tell me, why are you here?” He gestured for me to enter, closing the door behind
- us.
“I was wondering if I can stay here for some time.” The words came out in a rush.
“Some time?” His eyebrow arched slightly.
“Maybe a few days, a week, a month… I don’t know.” I looked away, suddenly unsure if I was asking too much.
“You told him,” Frost said, not a question but a statement.
“… I don’t know. Maybe I was asking for too much; maybe this is all my fault… I should never have told him about this, but I feared he would find out on his own, and then that would be so much worse.” The words tumbled out, the pain of Kaius’s rejection still
fresh.
