“I’m sorry.” He tried to control himself, but amusement still danced in his eyes.
“Are you going to answer my question, or would you just laugh in my face?” I demanded, fighting a smile of my own.
“But laughing in your face seems so… right.”
“Go to hell asshole.” I turned away, though there was no real heat in my words.
“I was kidding.” He moved closer, his hand gently turning my face back toward him.
“Forget it, and you will be sleeping on the bare floor tonight.” The threat was as empty as my attempt at anger.
“Don’t be like that Elowen.” His expression sobered, something vulnerable entering his eyes. “I still hate myself for what I did to you. I made you believe you weren’t good enough, and that’s why you went ahead with the ritual or whatever that was. I don’t
deserve you, Elowen.”
His admission caught me off guard.
“No, you don’t,” I agreed, watching his face fall slightly before I continued. “But I still love you anyway, and do you know what I want right now? I want you to make love to me on this couch in a very ungentlemanly way.”
For a moment, he seemed speechless. Then the hunger in his eyes ignited, and he was pulling me to him with an urgency that matched my own. His lips found mine, the kiss deep and demanding, his hands roaming my body as if rediscovering familiar
territory.
That urgency didn’t fade, bleeding into hours where words were unnecessary, replaced by the raw sex and desperate reconnection. We fucked practically the entire night, so much that my legs ached profoundly by the time exhaustion finally claimed us. When I eventually woke up, through sleepy eyes, I saw him already sitting there beside me, watching me silently, carefully.
“You have to go to work; I’m fine,” I said, catching his worried glance
“Maybe I did go a bit too far,” he replied, his fingers gently brushing a mark on my shoulder.
I smiled, stretching beneath the sheets. “And I liked it.”
“You did, didn’t you?” His lips curved into that knowing smirk that both irritated and thrilled me.
“Do you always have to be so cocky?” I threw a pillow at him, which he caught effortlessly.
“No, just once in a while.” He leaned down to kiss me, his lips lingering against mine. “I’ll be back early.”
I watched as he stood, adjusting his jacket with practiced ease. The sense of normalcy felt precious after everything we’d been through.
I am a big girl; I can take care of myself,” I assured him, noticing his reluctance to leave.
“Well, I could send in Frost.” The suggestion was casual, but I caught the slight tension around his eyes.
“No, not Frost.” The response came quickly, perhaps too quickly.
After what had happened between Frost and me–with Kaius’s implicit permission–things remained complicated. Seeing him this morning, when I still bore the marks of Kaius’s passion, felt too intimate, too confusing.

“Alright.” Kaius seemed satisfied with my answer. ‘Get some rest. You’ve earned it.”
After he left, I sank back into the pillows, allowing myself to drift in that pleasant space between waking and sleeping. The mark on my wrist had faded to a pale pink line, barely noticeable now. Perhaps it had been nothing after all–a strange reaction to my transformation, nothing more sinister.
I should have known better than to hope.
After lounging in bed for another hour, I finally dragged myself to the bathroom. The hot water soothed my muscles as I showered, washing away the last traces of last night. I hummed softly to myself feeling more settled than I had in weeks.
When I returned to the bedroom, wrapped in a towel, I froze in the doorway. Thalia sat in the armchair by the window, looking as comfortable as if she owned the place.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost; stop being so dramatic and take a seat,” she said, gesturing to the bed with languid grace.
“What are you doing here?” My voice came out steadier than I expected, given the hammering of my heart. Thalia should have been in the dungeons, securely locked away after Kaius captured her.
“Take a seat, Elowen.”
To my horror, my body moved without my permission, crossing the room to perch at the edge of the bed. The towel remained clutched around me, my only shield against her penetrating gaze.
Much better,” she smiled. “We have things to discuss, you and I.*
“You killed all those people… how could you? How could you do that to innocent people?” I spat.
“Please shut up; nobody from this pack is actually innocent.” She waved a dismissive hand. “And I didn’t kill them.”

“I didn’t kill them, Elowen.” Her smile turned cruel. “You did. You helped me escape; you killed all those soldiers because they had
spotted us.”
The world seemed to tilt beneath me. “I am convinced that you must be crazy.”
“Crazy? That’s a term many use to describe me.” She rose from the chair, moving toward me with predatory grace.
“Don’t come any closer.” I tried to stand, to back away, but my body refused to obey.
“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you; I just want to help you remember. Now don’t move.” She placed her cool palm against my forehead.
Images crashed through my mind like shattered glass–my hands gripping a sword, blood spraying across my face as I cut down soldiers who had once protected me. My voice, yet not my voice, speaking words I would never say. My body moving with lethal precision while my mind screamed in helpless horror.
“What did you do to me? Why can’t I move?” Panic clawed at my throat as I struggled against invisible bonds.
“So many questions; I am getting sick of that.” Thalia sighed dramatically, circling me like a predator assessing her kill. “You are evil, Elowen, for kill all those people, and I want you to remember just how you did it.”
‘I didn’t do this, Thalía. Tears threatened but I forced them back, refusing to show weakness as the memories solidified–the horror, the blood, the terrible efficiency with which I’d dispatched men who had trusted me.
“I’m sure you had a reason.” Her voice dripped with mock sympathy.

“No, I would never do anything like that.” I managed to keep my vole steady despite the turmoil inside.
With sudden clarity, I remembered the strange dream, the scratches on my skin, the mark around my wrist. “You made me do this… don’t know how you did it, but had been your voice in my head, controlling me.”
“And if it was… who do you think would believe you? I mean, they did by your hands, right? She trailed a finger along my jawline, forcing me to meet her gaze.
“How could you do that? How can you control me?” Fear gave way to fury, though my body remained paralyzed.
“You sought out for power; that was the beginning of your end. Your friend didn’t tell you all what this entails, did he?” Her smile widened at my confusion.
“A turned one is half demon. Demons are loyal to only one line of people, the Elders. For turned ones, they don’t have to be loyal, not until they are compelled. I control you now, Elowen, and there is not a single thing you can do about it.”
