Chapter 20 

Half were from Rowan Mercer, half from Lilith. I didn’t even look at his calls and dialed Lilith directly. 

“Sorry, sorry, I had low blood sugar, my mind wasn’t clear, so I left early. I even forgot to tell you” 

There was silence on the other end for a moment. 

…I should be the one saying sorry.” Her voice paused, her emotions unreadable, but I knew she understood what had happened. 

Between smart people, words are unnecessary. 

“Oh, it’s fine, I was just trying anyway. I’m already grateful for your help.” 

“Don’t say that,” Lilith exhaled, seeming to choose her words carefully. “I actually explained the clothing situation to Garrett Wylder, but his reaction was cold… However, I got his private number from Clay. Do you–want to try again?” 

I was quiet for a few seconds. 

“…Forget it.” I placed the phone beside my pillow. “He and I, it’s not meant to be.” 

Lilith didn’t push. She understood my pride and boundaries better than anyone. 

That night, I was physically exhausted but mentally alert. The whole night felt like counting seconds to the beat of my heart. 

Just as I was about to fall asleep, the door opened, and the atmosphere instantly changed. 

It was Rowan Mercer. 

“…Hmm?” I turned over to see him standing beside the bed, his face showing faint anger and scrutiny. 

I didn’t want to talk to him, so I turned back and buried myself in the blanket. 

“Were you at home all day today?” His tone was calm, but probing, with an undisguised hint of agitation. 

I remained silent. 

“I saw someone at the golf course who looked a lot like you from behind.” 

My body tensed immediately. So he had been there too. 

Huh, he was just being intimate with Moira Ashenford, yet he had the nerve to question me? 

I wanted to say “Yes, it was me, so what?” but reason made me hold my tongue. If he knew Lilith had connected me with Garrett Wylder, he might not let her off easily. 

He came closer, lifted the corner of my blanket, and his gaze fell on my neck. 

No bite marks. No trace of another’s mark. 

Relief flashed in his eyes, but he quickly tensed again. “Did you go out or 

“I didn’t go out. I spent the afternoon cleaning the yard,” I said flatly. “I want to sleep now. Don’t bother me.” 

He seemed to confirm I wasn’t lying and silently got up to leave. 

I watched his back as he left, but felt no emotional response whatsoever. 

The night was deep, with the moon hanging in the sky.

In a penthouse apartment. 

Garrett Wylder’s fingertips slid across the screen, his steady gaze scanning the information line by line. 

Elara Finch, twenty seven years old… 

“…Insiders know she has a close relationship with Rowan Mercer, but the exact nature is unknown–probably his mistress. Recordly, however, Roman is arranging a marriage alliance with the Ashenford pack, and rumors say she’s been sidelined.” 

Garrett Wylder didn’t speak, just stared at her photo for a few seconds. 

In the black professional attire, she looked refined and dignified, shoulders slightly drawn in, chin tight–the posture of someone who had endured pressure but still stood tall. Completely different from the woman he’d met in the forest. 

Then, her tone had been pleasing yet cautious, but her eyes hid a stubborn refusal to submit. Like a wolf with torn wings still trying to maintain her posture. 

“Delete the others,” Garrett Wylder said. 

Jack was stunned: “You mean…?” 

“Let her come and try,” he said.
