Chapter 1
After five years of being Child-Free, my husband suddenly brought home a pair of twins.
“I expect you to raise them as your own, Alani. They’re Wilsons now. And they’ll inherit all my assets.”
Thinking Alston had simply changed his mind about DINK, I visited doctor to have my IUD removed.
But the doctor delivered a devastating bomb:
“Mrs. Wilson, according to your medical records, your uterus was removed five years ago.”
*Some women are born without a uterus, but that’s not your case. Your uterus was surgically removed.”
I gripped the edge of the examination table, trying to make sense of the doctor’s words.
five years ago, I’d only had one procedure-to get an IUD fitted. Alston had been with me all day.
I remembered being nervous about the procedure. So Alston had pulled strings to arrange general anesthesia for me.
Maybe that’s when…? No, no way. Alston had waited right outside the entire time. No hospital would dare do that.
As I stumbled through the hospital corridor with those thoughts, I heard Beverly, Alston’s sister’s voice from around the corner.
Alston, are you crazy? Bringing those illegitimate home was bad enough, now you want to move your mistress in? Don’t tell me you are planning to cheat right inder Alani’s nose?”
It’s not a cheat, Bev. Ella saved my life. I’m just repaying a debt.”
Repaying two kids? Holy shit. Men can’t be that trashy. There has to be a line.”
It wasn’t what I asked for! Ella’s father was dying. I’m just fulfilling his last wish. I owed Ella my life. Giving her a child was my way of repaying that debt. I had 10 choice.”
Oh another debt? So you secretly married Ella, then tricked Alani into an IUD, but actually removed her uterus, and transplanted it to Ella so she could have ‘our baby?!”
t was my husband who had stolen my uterus?!
Alani hates pain. Childbirth would have been torture for her. I just can’t stand seeing her suffer. Her uterus wasn’t doing her any good if we weren’t having hildren. It made more sense for Ella.
Now everything’s perfect. The Wilson family blood continued, I pay back to Ella, and Alani was spared the agony of childbirth.
Besides, Ella has a terminal condition. She’ll be dead soon. She gave me a son and daughter. I can’t let her die alone. I bring her home just for hospice care.
Sure, what I did was little dramatic. But ultimately, everyone benefits.
Just don’t let anything slip to Alani. Ella only has a week left. This will all be over in a week.”
I don’t remember how I made it home. All I felt was cold-our once-warm home now felt like a freezer.
Every corner held memories of Alston and me. I truly believed he was the man who loved me most in this world before today.
I love extreme sports, so Alston joined me in skydiving, diving, and chasing whales in the Arctic…
As heir to the Wilson fortune, he wasn’t supposed to take such risks. But I love them so he unconditionally fulfilling all my wishes.”
“For you, I’ll do everything. I’d die right now if I had to, as long as you’re with me. You’re the only one I’ll ever love.”
Those promises now tasted like poison.
I couldn’t stand being surrounded by these lies anymore. I lit the fireplace and started throwing our photos into the flames, one by one.
The front door opened while I was mid-burn. Alston step in with Ella, looking pale in her hospital gown.
“Alani, you remember Ella-my mentor’s daughter.” Alston didn’t even notice what I was burning. He wore that soft smile he used when manipulating situations, lies flowing smoothly from his mouth.
“She’s an orphan with stage four lymphoma… terminal.
“She doesn’t have much time. I couldn’t just leave her to die alone in hospital room, so I brought her home.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Emma will take care of everything. You won’t have to lift a finger-pretend she’s not even here if you want.”
This decision has clearly made without consulting me.
You decide.” I said, dropping our wedding photo into the flames. It curled and blackened instantly.
ust like our marriage, had burned to ash now.
