Mom tapped her cane, “What’s wrong with that? Why are you so old-fashioned? Once divorced, you’re not related to our family anymore; what’s ‘sister-in-law’? I can tell that boy Luke has liked you since he was little, unless you don’t like Luke?”
My heart suddenly filled with mixed emotions. Speaking of Luke, I indeed don’t dislike him, but having watched him go to college, I’ve always treated him like a brother. How could I possibly remarry him?
I looked calmly at Lucas, “Dad doesn’t just have one son; Lucas can also mourn him. I don’t want to waste any more time with you and miss the auspicious time for dad’s funeral. If you don’t leave, I’ll call the police!”
I knew they wouldn’t let this go easily.
“This… Mom, please don’t say things like that. I’m several years older than Luke.”
However, during the days of my father-in-law’s funeral and burial, he didn’t cause trouble nor attended.
Moreover, Nate and I don’t have children, which is a relief.
I’ve never had any interest in the Grant family’s inheritance. Since Nate has already laid his cards on the table, I’ll wait until everything is settled and then divorce him and leave.
“Where were you when dad was alive? And now you suddenly care about filial duties? Dad doesn’t need a son like you.”
“Sophia! I am dad’s son! You forbid me from mourning? You’re the one who’s unfilial! If dad knew, he’d curse you from the grave! And it’s only right for me as a son to care for my father until his end! How dare you interfere! You’re just a daughter-in-law, can you replace me? I am the real son!”
The house will go to Luke, and the inheritance will be for mom’s retirement. Since we’re divorced, I’m no longer the Grant family’s daughter-in-law, there’s no need to take advantage.
“Mom, what are you saying? I’m Luke’s sister-in-law, how can that be? Don’t let Luke hear you; who knows what he’d think of me if he did.”
“No, once you leave and remarry, you’ll belong to someone else, and I can’t shamelessly cling to someone else’s daughter-in-law. You can’t leave…”

This beast probably doesn’t even know where my father-in-law is buried.
I smiled bitterly; after the divorce, I can’t just stay single forever.

Nate spat his harsh words and left with Julia, who gave me a resentful glare.
My father-in-law’s inheritance is quite substantial, plus the house worth millions. Nate won’t let it go.
Yet mom wouldn’t let me go, saying I can divorce Nate but must stay. She said she couldn’t bear to part with me.
“Mom, don’t worry, I’ll come and visit often.”
“Are you conspiring together? Sophia, I didn’t expect you to have this trick up your sleeve! You killed my dad, manipulated my mom, and had secret dealings with my brother! Shameless! You will face consequences! I’m not letting this go!”
I never imagined mom would say something so shocking, even I, as a young person, wouldn’t dare think it.
“Mom…”
“How about this: you divorce Nate and remarry Luke. That boy has a good heart and won’t let you down. You’ll be part of our family again and everything will be like before.”
“Why should I leave? This is my home, I have the right to be here, and I need to mourn my father! Are you going to stop me from fulfilling my filial duty?”
Nate gritted his teeth. Soft negotiations were futile, as I held the will and had the whole family’s support.
