8 Chapter 8
“You just graduated. You shouldn’t spend money so frivolously.”
“Huh? That’s too expensive. You should keep it for yourself.”
“What do you mean she’s my mom? She’s your mom. A meddling old woman. Listen, go sign the divorce agreement right now. Leave with nothing; you won’t get a penny of the Grant Family’s money.”
“Sister-in-law, are you asleep?”
Money is just material; I never really cared about it.
Taking a deep breath, I still decided to keep my distance from Lucas. However, Lucas and his brother couldn’t be more different. Nate is domineering, selfish, and doesn’t
respect women.
I suggested transferring the house to his name, but he said he wanted to earn money to buy a house and support me and Mom.
Unexpectedly, my mother-in-law suddenly became sorrowful as she spoke. I hurriedly comforted her, “Mom, you’re in such good health. Don’t say things like that.”
“Really, now that you say it, I understand. The old lady is trying to set you up. Don’t worry, before she passes, she’ll definitely resolve this for you. Otherwise, if I leave you alone, I won’t be at peace in the afterlife.”
And Lucas’s gaze at me didn’t seem quite right. Did Mother-in-law say something to
him?
“Is there something you need?”
How could I dare accept such an expensive gift from Lucas, but he insisted on putting it into my hands.
“You’ve supported me through college and taken care of my parents. What’s the big deal about giving you a phone?”
But thinking about my mother-in-law’s life, I had to agree to his demands.
I hurriedly closed the door, my hands covering my face. Why did I feel a warm
sensation? Could I possibly have feelings for this little rascal?
Before I knew it, I gradually got over the grief of my father-in-law’s passing and
returned to a normal life, especially living under the same roof with this
brother-in-law. Sometimes, when we bumped into each other in the bathroom, both of us would feel too shy to know where to hide.
“Why would marrying a wife cost money?”
“No need, sister-in-law. Even if you give it to me, I won’t take it.”
“I’m just getting a medical check-up for Mom. Her health is really poor, and she could pass away at any time. Especially in a hospital, if there were any medical accidents, heh
heh heh…”
“I’ve already found a job with an annual salary of over four hundred thousand. You don’t need to worry about me. I can support myself and also take care of you, my
sister-in-law.”
“Fine, you really care about that meddlesome old woman, heh heh, Julia Sanford’s idea is brilliant. I knew you’d act all filial. Hurry up and come sign the divorce papers with
me!”
I still tried to decline as much as possible.
I was instantly flustered and exclaimed, “Are you crazy? She’s your mother! How could you do this to her! Tell me which hospital she’s in now!”
“Nate, where did you take Mom!”
That kid actually made a joke about me, showing no respect for his elders.
“I, I need to sleep now.”
That night, I had a heart-to-heart talk with my mother-in-law. We talked for a long time. She shared many past stories with me and also mentioned a lot about Lucas Lowder.
I even found myself somewhat indulging in these small ambiguities.
But I kept contacting Nate about a divorce, and he constantly refused, which frustrated me greatly.

Lucas smiled brightly at me. I always felt there was more to his words.
This moved me a little.
I quickly put on my pajamas to open the door for him. Strangely, I felt a bit nervous.
I immediately became anxious, not knowing what plan Nate was up to.
“Goodnight, sister-in-law.”
I not only blamed myself for this; I’m not some eighteen-year-old girl anymore. He’s a college graduate, in the prime of his youth. Even if he has feelings for me, I shouldn’t be the older woman taking advantage of the young.
“Then marrying someone like you wouldn’t be costly.”
At night, Lucas unexpectedly knocked on my bedroom door, which made me feel quite
awkward.
“Save it for marrying a wife.”
“I know your phone got broken. I bought you the latest Apple model as a gift.”
I laughed and said, “Who told you that? Marrying a wife is the most expensive.”
“It’d be even more expensive to marry a sister-in-law like you! Just focus on your work. I’ll use the phone for now and pay you back later.”
Lucas, on the other hand, is cheerful, gentle, and considerate. Not only is he attentive to me in minor matters, but he also takes responsibility in major ones.
Until this day, my mother-in-law was suddenly hospitalized. It was Nate who forcibly took her there under the pretense of a medical check-up.
The atmosphere became unbearably awkward.
I didn’t want to thank him. Nate had become so heartless that he would threaten me
with his own mother’s life.
Lucas still had that brilliant smile, his eyes fixed on me, making me quite self-conscious, not knowing what to say for a moment.
