Chapter 8
After a moment of hesitation, I nodded.
I stepped aside and let Cedric in.
Only after the door closed behind him did I dare to speak.
“Don’t tell Celine. She’s about to give birth, and I don’t want her to worry.”
Cedric’s gaze lingered on me for a long time.
Fearing he wouldn’t keep my secret, I pleaded with him.
I knew Cedric had never hidden anything from Celine before.
This was truly a difficult request for him.
He really thought about it for a long while before reluctantly agreeing.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
In the end, I was the one to break the silence with a joke.
“Cedric, do you think we can keep this a secret?
Celine is pretty smart too. I’m afraid that after I’m gone, she won’t be angry with me but will blame you instead.”
After saying that, I even forced a laugh on my own.
“Is this why you agreed to divorce Ivor?”
Cedric took a step closer to me.
“Nina, don’t give up on yourself so easily. Does losing Ivor mean there’s no reason for you to keep living? Is there really no one else in this world that you hold
dear?”
The forced smile I had put on faded away.
For a long, long time…
It was only after a long while that I raised my gritty, sore eyes to look at him.
“Cedric, I’ve walked this path of loving Ivor for far too long. I’ve missed too many turn–back points, and now, I can’t go back. I’m not giving up on myself. I really want to live. Who would want to die if they could live?”
It’s just that I realized this truth too late.
When I was three years old, my parents divorced.
They each started new families with the people they’d been having affairs with.
And me, as an unplanned birth, was someone they both wished they could get rid of.
At that time, it was Ivor who begged his parents to take me in.
Throughout my entire life,
he left the deepest impression on me and held the greatest weight in my heart.
50, even after he betrayed me and got involved with Kira,
I still couldn’t let him go.
Unconsciously, tears streamed down my face.

1 tilted my head back and looked again at the only two good friends in my short life.
“Cedric, after I’m gone, it’ll be trouble for you, but I’m counting on you.
As for Celine, keep it from her for as long as you can.”
Three years later, Ivor still had no news of Nina.
After the thousandth call went unanswered, he reached out and lit a cigarette.
He’d picked up the habit of smoking when Nina started ignoring him.
Back then, when he sent her abroad, Ivor didn’t feel any remorse.
But looking back on it now, he realized he’d gone too far.
At the very least, he should have given her a heads–up.
No wonder she was so angry.
Three years had passed, and she still refused to forgive him.
Half a year after marrying Kira, Ivor contacted Nina for the first time.
He wanted to tell her that she could come back now.
That day, her phone rang until the very end, but no one picked up.
At that moment, Ivor couldn’t quite describe what he was feeling.
He just felt an empty, hollow sensation.
Even during their fiercest arguments, she had never hung up on him before.
Once a person gets used to something, even the slightest change can make them feel out of sorts.
That’s how it was with Nina for him.
Kira entered the room as he was reaching for his second cigarette.
Over these three years, whenever he thought of Nina, his brow would always furrow in concern.
It pained Kira to see.
“I’m sorry. Because of me, Miss Carter is angry with you.”
Her eyes, compared to three years ago, were no longer as clear.
It took Ivor a few seconds before he pulled the woman beside him into his embrace.
He paused, then reached out and stroked the top of her hair.
“My Kira is always so kind–hearted.”
The woman’s body stiffened, slightly resisting his embrace.
Ivor leaned in close, chuckling softly.
“Jealous?
Nina and I share the bond of having grown up together. Don’t overthink it.”
Kira didn’t know whether to believe him or not.
She gently pushed him away.
The smile on the man’s lips vanished.

After their marriage, he had started to become less patient with her.
Seeing that the woman was still frowning,
Ivor stared at her for a moment before picking up his suit jacket from the bed.
“There’s something at the company. Go to sleep early. Don’t wait up for me.”
