- 3.
For a second, I thought Chris was out of his
mind.
“If you’re sick, go to a hospital. I’m not a
therapist.”
く
“Lilly, what happened to you?”

Chris looked at me, disappointed. “Ashley has
been through so much. She finally wants to
go to school. Why can’t you help her?”
“If she gets to be in this experiment, she
might get into Stanford. Then you can study
together! Wouldn’t that be great?”
“You’re already at Stanford. You’ll have other
chances!”
Chris acted like it was no big deal and tried
to drag me away to change the list.
“So, Ashley’s trauma is my fault?”
I pulled away from him and said, “Just
because we’re related, I have to clean up
Ashley’s messes forever?”
“She’s your sister!”
Chris frowned. “You won’t even do this one
thing for her? You’re so cold!”
“Lilly, I’m starting to rethink our relationship!”
Oh, he didn’t know I had already dumped him.
I laughed and said, “If you’re so helpful, why
don’t you do it?”
“I heard you’re working on an experiment.
Why don’t you drop out and give Ashley your
spot?”
“I… I…”
Chris turned red and couldn’t say anything.
He only cared when it affected him.
I laughed and walked away.
That night, Brandon called.
He started yelling at me as soon as I picked
- up.
“Lilly, are you trying to kill Ashley?”
“It’s just one thing! Ashley’s been through so
much! How can you stab her in the back?”
“Give Ashley your spot in the experiment. If
you don’t, we’ll never forgive you!”
He was guilt–tripping me, like I was a terrible
person for not helping Ashley.
I could hear Ashley crying in the background.
“I just want to learn. Can’t you do this for me,
Lilly?”
“Are you still mad about what happened? I
was having an episode. I didn’t mean it…”
“If you don’t agree, I’ll kill myself!”
There was a bunch of noise and crying.
I rolled my eyes.
Soon after, someone else picked up the
phone.
“Lilly, you know Ashley’s sensitive. Why are
you making things hard for her? Are you
trying to kill her?”
My mom yelled, “If you don’t help, I’ll tell the
media what a terrible daughter you are!”
I hung up.
Soon after, Ashley sent me a taunting text.
“Lilly, you can’t beat me.”
“No matter how great you are, you’ll always
just be a replacement for me!”
She was so arrogant.
Ashley was smart. She deleted the message
right away.

But I had already saved it.
I had a record of her being awful.
I didn’t understand.
I wanted to study Ashley’s brain.
How could someone be so stupid?
She had been playing the victim for so long.
Did she think she was a good person?
