10 Chapter 10

Albert was completely floored. Where had Sherry gone? Why would she do this? His eyes scanned the room, finally landing on the whiteboard on the wall. There was writing on it.

Albert reeled back, shaking his head in disbelief. How could she cancel? Two months ago, when he accepted her proposal, her joy had been so real. How could she cancel the wedding?

His hand was shaking as he dialed. But Sherry was already on a flight to Seattle, and the call went straight to voicemail. Only the cold, robotic voice of the operator

answered.

Clinging to a last shred of hope, he rushed back home.

“What is going on? The date was set! Not only does she not show up, but she canceled the wedding? What game is she playing?”

He suddenly remembered that the house had felt empty when he and Krista returned from Las Vegas.

Now he understood. She wasn’t just clearing out things she didn’t need. She was erasing every trace of him, of their relationship.

As if waking from a dream, Albert fumbled for his phone to call Sherry.

His heart sank. Everything was fine yesterday. How could she be unreachable today?

The friends and family were stunned.

The house was silent, eerily empty. He noticed the gaping empty space on the wall where their only photo together used to hang-a picture Sherry had always treasured, which she kept spotless. Her makeup, her clothes… everything that belonged to her had vanished.

He walked over. The words, scrawled in black marker, burned his eyes: “We’re done.”

But now, the bride was a no-show, had canceled the wedding two weeks prior, and kept everyone in the dark.

Including herself.

10 Chapter 10

“Call Sherry! Ask her if she still wants to get married or not!”

She had long considered Sherry her daughter-in-law.

The photo was gone even then.

They hadn’t gotten the date wrong. After confirming with the staff that Sherry had indeed canceled the booking, Albert’s mother pulled him aside, trembling with rage.

Seeing the same shocked expression on her son’s face only fueled her anger.

He’d felt vaguely that something was missing, but when Sherry said she’d just cleared out some things they didn’t need, he hadn’t thought much of it.
