He had kept the pregnancy a secret precisely because he was afraid she wouldn’t
agree.
This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. The seed had been planted two weeks ago. She had used those fifteen days to methodically sever her feelings for him.
He didn’t want to talk to any of them. He couldn’t understand why she would do this. The staff member said she had canceled two weeks ago.
He remembered her on the sofa, her face devoid of pre-wedding excitement, devoid of anger at him leaving for Krista-there was only a dead, placid calm.
He had been planning to have another talk with her, to persuade her. But then Krista had called with the good news, and he had been so overjoyed that he’d rushed straight to the hospital.
Memories flooded back: her calm acceptance of canceling the engagement party, her utter lack of reaction to his trip to Vegas with Krista… Before, she would have thrown a fit.
Albert didn’t know that Sherry had known about the pregnancy all along.
She had seemed like she wanted to say something, but he had been in a rush to get to the hospital to see Krista and hadn’t listened.
The news was a bolt from the blue. His suspicion was true: Sherry was breaking up with him. But why? Today was supposed to be their wedding, a day he knew she had dreamed of for years. How could she just give it up?
Albert collapsed onto the sofa, his thoughts a tangled mess.
Was she trying to break up with him then?
His phone rang incessantly-his parents, his friends.
His mind raced, recalling Sherry’s unnervingly calm face from the night before.
He snatched up his phone and called Sherry again. When the call went through, his panic crystallized into anger.

He worried Krista’s health couldn’t wait for him to get Sherry’s permission first.
Panic and confusion battled within him.
Two weeks ago! That was the day he found out Krista was pregnant.
She knew Krista had saved his mother. He was just repaying a debt to his mother’s savior. What was so hard to understand about that?
But at the clinic, she hadn’t reacted, and she never brought it up again. So why break up the day before the wedding?
His plan had been to get Krista pregnant while simultaneously convincing Sherry, believing her love for him would make her compromise. He never expected things to move so quickly, throwing his plans into disarray.
Had she been planning to run away all along?
