24 Chapter 24

Just as Albert’s mother was about to lunge at me, a weak voice called out, “Sherry.”

Blood was pouring from the wound.

Seeing him about to collapse, I caught him, dialing 911 with my other hand.

Just before he lost consciousness, he heard the wail of sirens.

His mother knew her son well enough to see that he wanted to speak with me alone. Considering his weak condition, I reluctantly agreed.

Albert shook his head, his eyes fixed on me.

He fought to keep his eyes open and managed a weak smile when he saw my frantic expression. Agony ripped through his stomach.

“Albert, how are you feeling? Does it still hurt?”

I let out a sigh of relief and sank into a chair, my gaze falling on the still-unconscious Albert, my feelings a tangled mess.

After his parents left, it was just me and Albert. I looked at him, his face still pale.

Realizing Albert was awake, his parents immediately rushed to his side.

I never thought he would take a knife for me. Had he been following me?

My focus was on stopping the bleeding. I pressed down hard on the wound.

Albert’s parents rushed to the hospital. Seeing their son lying unconscious in bed, they were heartbroken. In their eyes, my disappearance from the wedding two years ago had sent their son into a downward spiral.

The searing pain I expected never came. I spun around to see Albert staggering behind me, one hand clamped over his abdomen, his face a mask of white.

After three hours of surgery, Albert’s vital signs stabilized. The doctor said the knife had missed any major organs, but the wound was deep, and he had lost a lot of blood.

Albert looked at me, his face filled with panic, before finally losing consciousness.

There was no need for the older generation to know about things that happened years ago. And besides, he really had saved me today.

Albert’s consciousness was already fading, the intense pain overwhelming his senses.

“You left him at the altar two years ago, and now he’s in the hospital. Can’t you just stay away from him?!”

Albert’s mother broke down, her voice laced with accusation. “What do you want?! What did Albert ever do to deserve this kind of torture from you?”

I didn’t argue, silently absorbing their anger.

Seeing his eyelids droop, I yelled, “Stay with me, Albert! Don’t you dare fall asleep! The ambulance is almost here. You have to hold on!”

Now, I had only been back for a few days, and he was in the hospital. They couldn’t help but feel resentment towards me.

Yesterday, I had made things perfectly clear. Why would he…? I had so many questions, but with Albert still unconscious, I could only swallow them down.

“Was it worth it?”

Paramedics lifted him onto a stretcher, applying pressure to the wound while radioing the hospital to prepare for emergency surgery.
