Chapter 9

Occasionally, Sherry would ask what he wanted to eat, or his opinion on some wedding detail.

His mother frowned. “Albert, why aren’t you changed? Where’s Sherry? Didn’t she

come with you?”

Albert’s mind went completely blank. The wedding was off?

Albert only left the hospital after Krista’s condition stabilized.

The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. His heart started to pound. Something was wrong. He tried to brush it off-she was just stressed with the wedding -and urged the driver to go faster.

He sent Sherry a text, asking how the wedding preparations were going and telling her he was on his way to the church. But by the time he arrived, he still hadn’t received a reply.

The staff member checked the registry. “Miss Bennett booked Hall 3.”

Just then, the staff member noticed a note at the bottom of the registry page. “Oh, but Miss Bennett called to cancel the reservation two weeks ago. She said the wedding was off.”

Albert let out a sigh of relief. He was overthinking things. Sherry was just busy. He made a mental note to buy her a really nice gift on their honeymoon to thank her for

all her hard work.

Still no reply. He gripped his phone tighter.

In twenty years, he had never seen her so hurt, so vehemently opposed to something.

He turned to head to the reception hall, only to realize he had no idea where it was. Sherry hadn’t told him, and he had never asked. His friends, naturally, didn’t know either, which was why everyone was waiting in the church lobby.

He forced a smile. “Sherry’s probably at the reception hall, making sure everything is perfect.”

He rushed into the church to find all their relatives and friends already there,

murmuring amongst themselves. They surrounded him.

Sherry had never seemed to mind, sending him messages every day. But for the past two weeks, there had been zero communication between them.

He stopped a staff member. “Excuse me, which hall is the Bennett wedding in?”

After that, she’d continued to object, but everything else had proceeded as usual. Their last real conversation about it had been two weeks ago. After that, the communication just… stopped. No more texts. Not a word at home.

He opened his phone to send another message and only then realized their last chat was from two weeks ago. He scrolled up. The chat history was practically empty.

His friends chimed in. “Where’s the bride? You’re not even in a suit!”

The words landed like a bomb in the middle of the crowd.

Albert’s replies were always the same: “Whatever,” “Fine,” “You decide.”

A strange feeling gripped Albert. Why had she stopped contacting him? He remembered the look of disbelief on her face a month ago when he told her about his plan with Krista.

Seeing that Sherry wasn’t there, a wave of panic washed over Albert. He had told her they would meet at the church this morning. Where was she? Did she go to the reception hall?
