Chapter 233
I feel so bad for those soldiers. The image of torn bodies, though I hadn’t seen them, haunted me.
“It had been an unexpected attack, but things like this are bound to happen and these soldiers know what they are getting themselves into by joining the force.” His pragmatism was surprising but not unfamiliar–Frost had always been practical about the realities of pack life.
“Any news about who aided Thalia’s rescue?” I asked as we reached the pack house.
“None yet,” he replied, opening the door for me. “It must have been someone higher up the radar; no one else can pull this off.”
The thought was disturbing–someone in Kaius’s inner circle, betraying him, helping a dangerous enemy escape. I wondered again about my mysterious marks, the strange dream. Could I be connected to this somehow? Had Thalia found a way to use me?
But how could I explain that without sounding paranoid? Without evidence, it was just a strange coincidence. And if there was something more sinister at work–if Thalia had somehow influenced me–would Kaius and Frost even trust me?
“I should get some rest,” I said as we reached my quarters. “It’s been a long day.”
“I’ll be right outside if you need anything.”
I nodded, grateful for his protection even as I held back the truth. Once alone, I carefully examined the marks on my skin. The scratches were healing, already faded to thin pink lines. The mark around my wrist, however, remained as vivid as before, a perfect
circle of irritated skin.
I tried again to shift into my wolf form, concentrating until my head ached with the effort. Nothing. Whatever connection had existed between me and my wolf was severed–or blocked. I couldn’t help but think it was connected to everything else happening.
Exhausted by the day’s events and my failed attempts to shift, I curled up on the couch, not wanting to face the empty bed. I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew, the door was opening, and Kaius was stepping inside.
He looked haggard, dark circles under his eyes, his clothes stained with dirt from the burials. When he saw me, his expression
softened slightly.
“Frost left immediately after you arrived,” I said quietly. “He said he would be back later.”
Kaius nodded, moving to pour himself a drink. I watched him down in one swallow, the tension evident in every line of his body.
“Kaius. I need to ask you a very unusual question.” The words emerged before I could think better of it, a desperate attempt to break through the heavy silence.
He turned, mild surprise replacing the weariness in his eyes. “At this moment, I need such unusual questions to take my mind off everything that has been going on lately. So ask on.”
Now that I had his attention, I felt my courage falter. “Um… well… since you’ve been back… we’ve only… actually done it… that one time… and it is okay if you aren’t ready yet. You know what? Forget it..”
“No, please go on.” Something like curiosity had replaced the haunted look in his eyes.
No. Embarrassment washed over me in a hot wave.
“Don’t be like that; I promise I won’t laugh.” There was a hint of the old Kaius in his tone, the playfulness I’d missed.
“Okay, straight to the point… I’ve been back for a while now. Why have we only slept together that one time since I returned?”

Chapter 233
To my dismay, his lips twitched, and then he was laughing–a genuine, surprised laugh that lit up his face despite everything.
“You said you wouldn’t laugh!” I protested, though seeing him smile after such a dark day was worth the embarrassment.
