Chapter 243
He studied me for a moment, chriosity evident in his ice–blue eyes, but didn’t press the issue, “Suit yourself:
For the next week, I repeated the same strategy. I stayed with Kaius during the day, joined him for meetings, followed him on his rounds. When he was occupied with duties that didn’t include me, I made sure to be with Frost or other trusted pack members, i never allowed myself to be alone, not even for a moment.
Kaius noticed, of course. How could he not? But he seemed to attribute my clinginess to insecurity after our recent conflicts, perhaps even to possessiveness after our night together. He didn’t question it directly, merely accepting my constant presence with patient amusement.
I knew the strategy wasn’t sustainable. Sooner or later, I would find myself alone, vulnerable to Thalia’s appearance. But each day I managed to avoid her felt like a small victory, a temporaty reprieve from the inevitable.
On the seventh day, my fragile safety shattered.
Kaius and I were in our chambers, preparing for bed, when a sharp knock interrupted us. He opened the door to find one of his commanders standing there, expression grim.
“There is something you need to see, Alpha,” the man said, his voice tight with controlled emotion.
I knew instantly. Something had happened–something designed to separate us.
“I’ll be back soon,” Kaius said, turning to me.
“Wait!” I reached for him, panic rising. “I want to come with you.”
He hesitated, then shook his head. “I don’t think you will want to see this; it is wise you stay here, Elowen.”
I opened my mouth to protest further, but the determination in his expression stopped me. This was Alpha business, and I knew that tone. He wouldn’t allow me to accompany him, not for this.
“It’s alright. I’ll be waiting.” I forced a calm I didn’t feel, watching as he left with the commander.
As soon as the door closed behind them, I began to pace, counting the seconds until Thalia would appear. She’d grown tired of waiting, had engineered this separation. I was certain of it.
“Step back, please.” Her voice came from behind me, confirming my fears.
I whirled to face her, instinctively dropping into a defensive stance. “Get out.”
“Bad bad, Luna. Look what you made me do.” She stepped closer, a pair of silver handcuffs dangling from her fingers. “Kinky,” she added with a smirk. “Put the cuff on.”
“You have control over me; you don’t have to make me wear that to control me,” I said, but my hands were already reaching for the cuffs, my body obeying her command even as my mind rebelled.
“Oh, I know that. Still, I just needed to show you how much in control 1 am, now be snappy about it.” She watched with satisfaction as I locked the cuffs around my wrists. “Good. Now ask me what I had to do to get to you.”
My mouth formed the words against my will. “What did you have to do to get to me?”
I had to kill a girl–she should be around ten or twelve maybe.” Her casual tone made the words even more horrifying.

“Why? Why would you do that? Revulsion and rage exploded through me. “Just stop it, stop killing people; what the hell is wrong
with you?‘
“You know just what is wrong with me. I was used, and I am doing the very same thing to you right now.” Her eyes hardened. ‘Back to the little girl, do you want to know how I killed her?”
“Stop, I begged, tears forming in my eyes.
“This is your fault, Elowen. Your little strategy of never being alone orced my hand. Those deaths are on you.”
