Blake knew the whole damn story. Every time I brought it up, he’d jump to defend Lila.
“She was just a kid back then–didn’t know what she was doing.
Of course she’d be jealous seeing her dad had another daughter. She’s been beating herself up about it for years. Why rant you just let it go?”
I stared at Blake waiting for my answer, and something clicked. I was finally over it.
The people who get you will always get you. The ones who don’t just pick you apart.
“I told you on our wedding day–you want a divorce? Just give me red roses.”
“The second you made me walk through that rose–covered hallway and make nice with my mom’s killer, we were finished.”
“It’s not just you screwing around. It’s how you worship the ground Lila walks on.
Seriously, which one of us is supposed to be your wife?”
Blake just stood there like an idiot, taking forever to say anything.
“Ember, I… I just wanted you to have more people in your corner. Lila’s your family too, right?”
I laughed, but there was nothing funny about it.
“You mean the family that killed I my mom? Or the one fucking my husband? Or maybe the one stealing our company?!”
“Blake, do you even have a brain in there?! Did you think about how I’d feel for like two seconds before saying that crap?!”
Blake went dead silent. When he saw me losing it, he tried to pat my back, but I jerked away.
“Ember, I screwed up big time. Just forgive me, okay? I’ll fix everything you hate about this situation. We… we don’t have to
split up.”
“I need you. The company needs you.”
“We talked about having kids together, remember? A boy and a girl?”
And there it was–showing his true colors.
He didn’t actually love me that much.
He just needed me to keep his business running.
I was done dealing with Blake’s bullshit, so I waved him off and started to leave.
Blake grabbed my arm tight–the more I tried to pull away, the harder he squeezed.
“Ember, why can’t you just give me one shot?”
“Blake! You know roses mess me up, but you threw them in my face anyway! Remember how you used to be when we first started dating? You’re totally different now, which just proves you don’t love me!”

Right as Blake tried to pull me into some pathetic hug, Kieran came out of nowhere and decked him.
Then he grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him, shielding me.
Blake wiped the blood off his mouth and looked at Kieran.
“Who the fuck are you?!”
“Ember’s little boyfriend? You know she’s married, right?!”
Seeing how close we were, Blake went completely nuts with jealousy.
Kieran stayed cool as hell.
“Yep, I’m her boyfriend! You guys are getting divorced anyway, so what husband? I’m her man now!”
Blake totally lost his shit and went after Kieran. They started beating the crap out of each other.
Being younger definitely paid off–Blake got his ass handed to him pretty fast.
I was scared Kieran might get hurt, so I pulled them apart and got in Blake’s face.
“We’re on classified government projects now. You wanna go to jail for attacking federal employees? Blake, you better get lost before I call the cops!”
Blake stumbled to his feet, shaking like a leaf.
He remembered that package from the research institute and knew I wasn’t messing around.
