Chapter 5
Three days later, Mom passed away. She went peacefully, as if simply falling asleep.[]
Her face looked serene, the ghost of a smile lingering at the corners of her mouth, as though she’d finally set down all her burdens.
In her final moments, she clutched Jason’s hand tightly, whispering a stream of maternal concerns: reminding him to take care of himself, to work hard, to settle down soon…]
For me, standing silently nearby, she offered only a fleeting glance. Her lips moved slightly, but whatever words she might have had for me remained unspoken.]
I never did receive even the smallest bit of motherly advice.]
Not even the sound of my name on her lips one last time.]]
After the funeral, I returned to my mother’s house, emotionally drained.]]
In an unremarkable corner of her bedroom, I found the old jewelry box she’d mentioned in her will.
When I opened it, a cloud of dust and musty air escaped. []
Looking at these tarnished pieces my mother had once cherished as her bridal dowry, my heart ached with finality. I just wanted to get rid of them and bury every memory of my mother along with them.[]
Jason glanced at the worn box in my hands, a barely concealed smirk playing across his face.[]
“Don’t worry. I won’t try to take that from you,” he said with undisguised condescension. “Those were Mom’s most treasured possessions–no matter how worthless they might be, you should keep them safe!“]
I looked at him silently, wondering when the little brother who once followed me everywhere calling “Emma! Emma!” had become so calculating and callous.[]
Later that week, I took the jewelry box to an appraiser. My voice sounded hollow even to my own ears.]
“Could you tell me what these pieces are worth? I’d like to sell everything.“[]
The appraiser accepted the box and examined the contents meticulously–cleaning, tapping, testing. Suddenly, his expression changed to one of stunned surprise. []
He called over several senior colleagues, who huddled around the pieces with professional excitement.[]
Finally, the head appraiser turned to me, his voice cautious: “Ma’am, are you absolutely certain you want to sell all of these?“]
I nodded tiredly, just wanting to sell them as soon as possible. I was hoping that I would never to think of my biased mother again.
He nodded in acknowledgment, then turned the pawn value amount to me.[]
However, the moment I saw it-

My knees buckled.[]
I had to grip the counter to remain standing as my mind reeled, as if the whole world was spinning around me.]]
How… how could be?![]
My heart inexplicably tightened, and the appraiser’s next words sent me into an even DEEPER state of shock!]
