Thorne was freaking out on the side.
“Mr. Vasker, we’ve got massive investments tied up in that North project. If they just pull out like this, we’re gonna be
in serious financial trouble!”
Vasker Corp had been barely hanging on for years.
With the economy in the shitter and their main business being construction, they’d already taken a massive beating.
The North project was a states contract – if they landed it, the company would be solid for at least a decade.
Cressida knew exactly how tight things were, which is why she’d busted her ass on this deal, even drank herself into a bleeding ulcer at those business dinners.
Thinking about it made something twist painfully in Silas’s chest.
He grabbed his phone, hesitated for a long moment, then finally dialed.
“Cressida, haven’t you thrown enough of a tantrum?”
“I didn’t approve your resignation, and I signed those divorce papers without knowing what they were. They don’t
mean shit.”
“Look, I get it – you’re pissed I missed our anniversary dinner. I already made reservations at that place again, tomorrow night…”
It was the first time Silas had ever talked to her this gently.
He figured she’d be laughing with relief on the other end.
Instead, she cut him off cold.
“Silas, we’re done.”
“Work, marriage, all of it. I don’t give a damn if you accept it or not. I don’t want your money.”
“I just want out, and you can’t stop me.”
Her voice was ice cold, and Silas’s hand started shaking around his phone.
“You think you can just decide we’re over?”
“I don’t fucking agree!”
Silas suddenly realized how pathetic he sounded and slammed his fist on the desk.
But all he got back was a dial tone.
