Chapter 8
Before the bidding presentation, I was pretty nervous.
Killian walked over and patted my shoulder.
“Don’t tell me you’re chickening out now?”
Instead of snapping back like usual, my palms were actually sweating. I felt embarrassed.
“What if we don’t get it? I already talked all that shit…”
Silas hadn’t given up – he’d convinced the North project team to give them one more shot at bidding.
“Cressida, where’s that fire you used to have?”
“Look, even if you don’t believe in yourself, you gotta believe in me. I don’t pick losers.”
Meeting his confident gaze, I felt a little better.
Then I turned around and locked eyes with Silas, who looked pissed as hell.
The tension was thick.
Anya grabbed onto Silas’s arm like she was marking territory.
“Wow, Ms. Hale really is something – barely unemployed and already jumping into bed with the competition. Such impressive… networking skills.”
Her smug smile made my blood boil.
I forced down my anger and let out a cold laugh.
“Thanks for the compliment, Anya. Oh, and don’t forget to grab those stockings you left at my ex–husband’s place.”
“You…bitch!”
Anya’s face went through about five different shades.
Killian hid his smirk and leaned in close.
“There’s the Cressida I know.”
Seeing me and Killian practically breathing on each other, Silas finally exploded.
“Cressida, what the hell do you think you’re doing!”
I glanced at him coldly and deliberately linked arms with Killian.

“Come on, let’s go. They’re starting.”
I brushed past Silas.
I could feel his breathing get all messed up.
But I didn’t give a damn anymore.
He was just another stranger to me now.
Up on the platform, since I knew this project inside and out, I went off–script and totally nailed it, showcasing everything Drake Corp had to offer.
The clients couldn’t hide how impressed they were.
Silas just stared at me up there, looking completely stunned.
He seemed amazed by how I was just glowing up there.
After all this time, he’d forgotten.
Cressida had always climbed her way up through pure talent.
“Next, let’s hear from Vasker Corp.”
Anya nervously gripped her dress.
“V–Vasker Corp has been… over the years…”
Seeing her stumbling over her words, the clients started frowning.
“Mr. Vasker, you specifically asked for this opportunity. Is this really Vasker Corp’s idea of commitment?”
Anya looked like she was about to cry, staring at Silas helplessly.
“Mr. Vasker, I…”
It was her usual move – had always worked before.
But not this time..
Silas completely ignored her, his eyes glued to me and Killian.
His nails dug into his palms as he slammed the table and stood up.
He stormed over and grabbed my hand.
“Cressida, you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”
“Flirting with Killian right in front of me to mess with my head?”

1 almost laughed at how pathetic he sounded and yanked my hand away.
“Mr. Vasker, can you please act professional?”
“The clients are right here. Stop embarrassing yourself.”
“We’re supposed to be showing our capabilities.” I looked at Anya with disgust. “Does she have any?”
Someone who only knew how to use her looks to get ahead was totally lost when it came to actual skills.
In that moment, I almost felt grateful to Silas.
If he hadn’t made me think he valued competence in women, maybe I would’ve ended up like Anya – just some guy’s arm candy.
The results were pretty obvious.

I didn’t want to stick around, so I pulled Killian toward the exit.
Silas just stood there watching me leave, not even noticing when the clients came over.
“Mr. Vasker, we’re sorry.”
“We’re sticking with our decision – we’re going with Drake Corp.”
Those words hit him like a sledgehammer.
It took him a while to snap back to reality.
He turned to the nervous woman beside him, his eyes dark.
“Anya, didn’t you swear this was in the bag?”
He finally remembered she was there.
If it wasn’t for her, Cressida wouldn’t have left him.
This North project wouldn’t have gone to Killian.
Anya had never seen him look this scary before. She grabbed his hand, trying to be cute.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Vasker.”
“I just didn’t prepare well enough.”
“Give me another chance, next time I’ll be totally ready…”
She looked all pitiful and innocént.
Silas tiredly pulled his hand away.
