At the dinner table, I became quite chatty, talking with Sam the whole time.
Sam kept calling me sweet.
Caleb naturally noticed something was off about me, but he didn’t say anything–just ate slowly and elegantly.
I looked away and continued talking to Sam: “Grandpa, you probably don’t know this, but Mia is the most beautiful girl at our school. Just a few days into the semester, she already had tons of guys chasing after her…”
Mia’s fork clattered to the floor.
Sam was startled for a moment, then laughed and had a servant bring Mia a new fork.
“Be careful,” he reminded her.
Mia said shakily, “Grandpa, don’t listen to Ruby’s nonsense. I… no boys are chasing me.”
“That’s impossible–I saw it myself.” I smiled. “Are you being shy? You’re eighteen now, you can date. Grandpa wouldn’t forbid you from dating, would he…”
Mia kept her head down, eating, and whispered, “Shut up.”

As if suddenly remembering something, she looked up at Caleb and said, “Ruby has lots of admirers at school too. Caleb, doesn’t that bother you?”
Caleb turned to look at me, gently patting my head. “Your
studies are the most important thing right now. Wait until after college to start dating.”
I nodded.
Mia looked frustrated but quickly lowered her head when she caught Caleb’s gaze.
Her hands were trembling.
After dinner, Caleb took me home.
He was very quiet, not saying a word.
When we got back, I was about to head straight upstairs when Caleb’s voice stopped me.
“Want to watch some drama?”
I turned around and asked, “What?”
I was genuinely confused.
“Come with me.” Caleb took my hand and led me upstairs to his

He turned on his computer and clicked on some software, and immediately Mia’s heart–wrenching screams filled the room.
“Grandpa, I didn’t! I really didn’t! No! Grandpa, please…”
“It hurts! Grandpa! Stop hitting me…”

I started shaking.
Suddenly I couldn’t take it anymore and covered my ears tightly, shouting, “No! Stop!”
Caleb quickly shut off the computer and held me, saying, “Ruby, don’t be scared. I’m sorry.”
I pushed him away and pounded on his chest: “Why? Why did you make me listen to that? Caleb, I hate you! I hate you! I hate
you…”
I hate Sam, I hate Mia.
I want to send them all to hell!
