Two days later, Caleb woke up.
The way he looked at me had completely changed.
I was about to call the doctor when he stopped me.

I froze.
“You… you…”
Caleb had recovered his memories from his past life!
“You know everything now?”
Even lying in the hospital bed, Caleb still had that commanding

My heart raced, and it took me a while to calm down. “I’ll go get
the doctor.”

I stopped and slowly turned to face him.

He looked at me, and after a long silence, asked: “Have you ever thought of me as your brother?”
I just stared at him.
Caleb’s gaze grew deeper, as if he was waiting for something.
He asked again: “Even for a moment, did you ever truly care about me?”
Looking at Caleb in the hospital bed, I lowered my head and said softly: “I’m sorry.”
I thought to myself: “I’m sorry, Caleb. I’ve been using you all along. All these years, I’ve been using you.”
All this time, I only cared about myself.
It seemed like I’d never be able to truly care for anyone again.
I said: “I’ll go get the doctor.”
The doctor told me that Caleb was out of danger but still needed to stay for observation.
I nodded: “Then I’ll go home and get some things for him.”
After packing Caleb’s personal belongings, I returned to the hospital.

But Caleb’s bed was empty.
I felt my heart go empty too.

Behind me, I heard a nurse sigh: “He was out of danger. How could he suddenly die?”
I stood there frozen, feeling like the entire world had suddenly lost all connection with me.
I don’t know how long passed–it felt like a century.
Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“Ruby.”
I froze for a moment, then slowly turned around.
I saw Caleb leaning on a crutch, wearing a hospital gown.
But I couldn’t see his face clearly.
“Why are you crying?” he asked.
I touched my cheek and realized I was crying.
My throat hurt. I opened my mouth, and it took a while before I could make a sound.

I said: “I thought you were dead.”
Caleb chuckled softly: “Wouldn’t that be better?”
I couldn’t control my emotions.

I could feel my lips trembling violently as I cried and said: “That wouldn’t be good. Then I wouldn’t have any family left.”
For ten years, I’d been trying so hard to make myself cold and selfish.
But Caleb still managed to warm me up, bit by bit.
He was my brother.
No matter what he was like in his past life, no matter whether he was a good person or not, I didn’t care.
Caleb was my family.
Caleb walked over on his crutch and wiped away my tears:
“Don’t cry. I won’t die. As long as you still need me, I’ll always be by your side to protect you.”
I nodded: “Okay.”
