Downstairs, I saw a maid bustling around in the kitchen.

make you breakfast.”
The breakfast was lavish, but I had no appetite. After just a few bites, I put down my fork, wanting to wait for Caleb to return so I could talk to him about going to school.
Caleb didn’t come back until after eleven at night.
I heard movement at the bedroom door and steeled myself before walking out.
Caleb had already gone to his room, but when I went in, I didn’t see him.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom.
Knowing he was showering, I climbed onto his bed.
When Caleb came out after his shower and saw me on the bed, his expression darkened.
“Who told you to sleep here? Get down!”
I clutched the blanket tightly, curling up into a ball. “I’m scared. Caleb, I want to sleep with you.”
Just as he was about to lose his temper, I started crying.
I could see deep helplessness and anger on Caleb’s face. He really was a complicated man.

He closed his eyes, and after a long moment, muttered a curse under his breath.
I pretended to be innocent and asked, “Caleb, what did you say?”
“Shut up!” Caleb suddenly walked over, pulled back the blanket, and lifted me up.
Just as I was about to continue crying, he silenced me with his finger.
He put me back on the bed and said, “Tomorrow you’re going to school like a good girl.”
I was surprised, feeling like things were going too smoothly.
