Even though it was already fall, the weather was still sweltering hot.
When I got up in the morning, I looked at Mia in her long sleeves and pants and deliberately asked, “Aren’t you hot wearing long–sleeved pajamas right now?”
I was just making casual conversation, trying to get under her skin a little.
But my comment really did hit a nerve with Mia.
She snapped, “I’ll wear whatever I want to wear. What’s it to you?”
I pretended to be offended and said, “I was just showing some concern for you.”
As I got out of bed to go to the bathroom to freshen up, Mia’s voice suddenly came from behind me: “Ruby, you’re not doing so well yourself, are you?”
I stopped in my tracks, turned to look at her, and pretended I hadn’t heard clearly. “What did you say?”
“Stop acting,” Mia said mockingly. “Caleb’s the master of putting on an act, and now you’re getting just as good at it.”

Her gaze dropped to my legs, and she laughed. “I’d advise you to make good use of those legs while you can still run and jump. Don’t wait until you can’t use them anymore and regret it.”
I figured she was talking about herself from her past life.
I glanced down at my legs and muttered, “Don’t talk nonsense.” Then I went into the bathroom.
Of course, Mia wasn’t talking nonsense at all. She was just waiting for the day when Caleb would break my legs so she could have a good laugh at my expense.
But soon enough, my chance to strike back would come.
